Anyone use neatsfoot oil as a patch lube ? How does it perform ? Is it worth trying ?

Hi Sully

I used neatsfoot oil as a patch lube for many years and it was very good. I was in Perth Western Australia at that time which is very hot and dry. The neatsfoot oil did not dry out. I could keep oiled patches in a tin for a long time. I now live in Brisbane Queensland and I am getting back into muzzle loading and haven’t tried it in this humid climate. Should work OK here also.

Regards

Doc Carver
If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.

The neatsfoot oil I have for leather(Kiwi brand?) is petroleum based, fwiw.

I've never used it as patch lube but melt a toilet seal ring and mix neatsfoot oil in it to make a lube for conicals - does great a cylinder pin lubed with it doesn't stick as bad as one just oiled.

Thanks Doc. It sounds like it is worth trying. I will pick some up this weekend and give it go.

Mommicked, I never thought that neatsfoot oil could be petroleum based. I wonder what KIWI added to it ?

Make sure you get the pure Neatsfoot oil and not the Neatsfoot oil compound or Neatsfoot with anything added. It works fine as a patch lube in some guns.

My bottle says Kiwi Camp Dry Neatsfoot Oil, (I never noticed the camp dry part before now, but NF Oil is in real big letters). Says conatains petroleum hydrocarbons......I've been using it on slings holsters, and sheaths with wild abandon.

I just figured if you grabbed a bottle of that and put some in your muzzle it may not do what you were looking for. I'm new to all this, but remember being told in no uncertain terms NOT to use anything petroleum related inside the muzzle. :hmm: I wouldn't have thought there would be petrl. in it, but this is 2007 not 1907, so just don't grab a bottle of what I grabbed at Wally World.

Humbly,
Mommicked

You can get "pure" neatsfoot oil at most feed stores as that is what a lot of people put on their saddles and leather goods. Mine is made by Horse Health Products.

Mommicked, I wouldn't use it on leather either, there is nothing worse for leather than petroleum products and that means "neatsfoot oil compounds", some of which are mostly compounds and light on neatsfoot oil. Pure neatsfoot oil itself is relatively expensive but is one of the best things there is for leather AS LONG AS you don't over-do it, as with everything, less is more. Over do it and you will ruin leather no matter what you use. Sorry to wander off topic, but I've been working in leather for almost 30 years and I have seen more good leather ruined by over-application of any number of different products (some good and some bad) than anything else.

50/50 pure neatsfoot oil, murphys oil soap=Moose snot, best patch lube I have ever used. been shootin' M/L for close to 50 years.
