I just order a 1858 Remington 44cal today for my son's b day.Anyways I only have one goex 2f.The only powder I and the only thing around is pyroex RS.My buds in buck skinning said that they are get a big shipment of it this fall before hunting starts. So how do I load RS in my son's rem like 25-30 garins.I have no clue on that with that powder.Plus what size of caps I should get for it #10 or #11's I will be using factory nippels for now.Just how long does a factory nipple last any ways be fore replacement of them. Now to round balls I have a 451 mold but from what I seen on here every one uses 454 or once in a while 457 round ball what one would work the best in my uberti 44..Please guide me in the right way.

Before shooting mine the first time,I replaced the factory nipples with Treso nipples. Remington#10 caps fit them perfect. I load with 30grs. Goex 2F, an Eastern Maine lubed wad and a Hornady .454 ball. You'll love that Remmie.

Although Pyrodex P is the pistol powder, the RS will work fine.
Your loads with it will be the same as if it was Pyrodex P or 3Fg black powder.

Because of the chamber size, it's impossible to overload these revolvers as long as black powder or a black powder substitute powder is being used.

not sure what caps you should get, i dont have any experience with uberti guns. just make sure they fit good and snug. as for loads, i recently found the magic load for my 58 which is 20gr of 2f, 20gr cream of wheat and .454 ball. i dont use any lube or wads, i just put two drops of oil in the cylinder pin hole every time i load.

this is at 25 yards. there are six balls in that "y" shaped group and the high one was with a full load of 40gr 2f. also, i would try your .451 mold. as long as you get a full ring of lead to shave off they should work fine.

The RS will work - maybe better than the P. If you are getting by with the factory nipples. you will just have to try and find the best fit. Maybe Rem or CCI #10's. If the cap is too tight, you can chuck the threaded part of the nipple in an electric drill and polish the cone w/ sandpaper and/or a file to cut it down and get a better fit.

.451" might work, esp. if it is not absolutely pure lead. You just want a full ring of lead. the Lee RB moulds work rather well, and are very cheap. ~19US at Cabela's.

Depending on the humidity where you are shooting, almost any non-petroleum grease can be used for lube. I recommend lubed felt wads under the ball.

You want to be SURE that when you seat the wad on the powder, it does not touch the ball. If it does, it will prevent the ball from centering itself in the chamber, and it will shave lead unevenly.

Do you really have to use wads?I thought about not using them just powder and a ball. Why would you use a wad? Oh I found some triple 7 powder. How good is it? He wants 23 bucks a pound for it.

Thanks for all the replies

Nope, they aren't necessary at all. I like them because they are not as messy to shoot. You can get by with just powder, ball, and a dab of Crisco or some other lard on top of the ball. Actually, you can get by without the lube at all, but it tends to keep the fouling soft so you can shoot a bit longer, and get less leading. You just need to keep a shop rag handy to wipe the gun and your hands occasionally. Actually, that is a good practice anyway.

Thanks
