OK, so I have a couple of hunts booked in the near future for big game. Moose and bear to be specific. I want to use my old faithful .58 Renegade for both.
Can anyone recomend a conical bullet that would be useful for game in that size range.
Due to the fact that the gun does not shoot them well, I am not open to the idea of using a patched round ball on these hunts.
So, what can you tell me, based on experience, about what to use. Right now, I am leaning toward the Hornady GP as it is really accurate out of my rifle. I am getting a true 1444 fps out of the gun using a charge of 100 gr. Goex 2F.
More than enough power.
Any other ideas?

Based on my shooting in 58 cal guns, that would be my pick too. Haven't poked any game with 58 cal conicals (yet) but my Big Boar and a couple of others sure likes those Hornady's. My only regret is that Lyman doesn't make their Plains bullet mould in 58 caliber. It would sure make the shooting a lot cheaper.

The TC Maxi wouldn't be a bad choice either, but with the larger meplat on the Hornady, I'd sure have lots more confidence in it.

The problem I see is your limited with that 1-48 twist when it comes to conicals but like Brownbear says the larger meplat conicals is what you want. Hit em hard with a big flat nose and they won't argue much.

I thought of using a maxi out of my 58 Big Boar last year. They grouped well.....about a foot lower than a RB at 50yds.KICK LIKE A MULE!Use a RB and hit them in the right spot.

I have taken many moose and caribou with my .54 using the 425gr Great Planes Bullets, with a load of 110gr 3F, kicks hard but its not for target shooting, hunting you only need one shot. I think you would do well with them if you place the shot right.

I have never recovered one of these bullets they always go through the animal and leave a substatial exit hole.

I thank you all for the information. For whatever it's worth, I have never been able to get this gun to group well with a PRB. Maybe it's the gun, maybe it's me, maybe it's the components. In any case, it simply will not shoot a round ball hunting load well enough to meet my desires. However, just about any conical, with a few exceptions, groups well under 1 1/2 inches at 50 yards. Hence, I will only hunt with conicals when I use the .58. All the other smokepoles, I have 9, are another story. They are used mainly at the range, so power levels are not at all important.
Now, if I can lay my grubby paws on some properly sized Minie balls, I may give them a try using the old Civil War load of 65-70 grains of powder.
That oughta be a hoot.
Thanks again
