Regarding the Colt style BP revolvers such as the 1860 Army: What suggestions are there for improving the sights?
I know that some events may not allow modifying the sights.

They're really aren't any! Unless you want to open-up the notch in the hammer with a file. But be very careful, because you could cause the revolver to not be as accurate as they can be with those lousy sights!

The thing that you have to remember is that revolvers we meant for close-quarters fighting. This is where the Colt's shined, due to their superior "pointability"!

That being said, once you get used to them you can find them to be quite accurate! Accurate enough to hit a gong 3 out of 5 times at 135 yards away using just those lousy sights with the notch in the hammer.

If you want adjustable sights, buy a 1858 Remington New Model Army that has them on it.

Just my 2 cents' worth

The only thing I would recommend would be to get a taller front sight. You will probabaly have to have one made. There is not much you can do with the rear. A taller front sight will drop the POI to the POA within 50 yards. Most of these pistols were set up to hit dead on at about 100 yards.

It might be tough to do. Most of the barley corn sights are threaded and will come out easily but some are press fit and will be a little tougher to install properly.

When I used to hunt rabbits with my Colts, I never used the sights. For close work like that they would shoot too high. I just sighted down the barrel and it worked fine.

For what it's worth, some of the orignal colts
that were set up with shoulder stocks had sights
installed on the barrel. A set of folding leaf
sights like were on some colt dargoons would be

Hello. My Colts were sent to an experienced gunsmith to install an authentic-looking taller front sight and an 11 degree cut on the forcing cone. You can't believe the difference. Not only does the gun shoot accurate, but it shoots where you point it. My front sights were set to shoot at 25 yards. It amazes me that no one (I know of)has come out with a ready made dove tailed, taller front sight for these Colt revolvers, considering how many there are on the market.
