I ordered an 1860 Army Civilian Uberti and they do not have it. I see that many here say that it is good quality.

They do have an 1860 Army Civilian Cimmeron....little more money.

My question is are they a good gun maker?

Thank you

Cimmeron doesn't make the guns, they import them.

I can't speak from first hand knowledge but most agree that Cimmeron either individually selects the Uberti guns they want to import or they have an agreement with Uberti to supply only the best.

They do ask more for their guns but as far as fit and finish they are considered to be among the best.

I've not shot one but there is a fella in western MO. Who might be able to help and that ed be Dell Warren the propritor of James County Mercantile. He's a suttler and gun repairer and dealer in period reproductions and he can point you in the right direction or he might have a good deal on a pistol at his shop.

Uberti makes Cimmaron. Supposedly the Cimmarons are made/selected for better fit/finish. Personally I prefer the Uberti - fit & finish is fine and they are better about not putting modern lettering & logos in highly visable areas on the gun. They both shoot just fine.

Agree with what Zonie wrote.

Cimarron's are very nice. Have owned several 1851 and 1860's Colts by them and was impressed by the quality.

It has been about a year since selling the last one... if I recall correctly the Cimarron's had discreet Italian markings and had a nice Cimarron barrel address on top with Fredericksburg, Texas included similar to the barrel address style real Colt's have.

Thanks folks I really appreciate it. I am fired up to get my first BP pistol. I have burned powder in long guns for sometime but have wanted a pistol for a while.

I did order the Cimarron 1860 Army.

My next question is most likely of infinite stupidity. I see Remington mentioned as well as Colt but so far I cannot see who originally designed this gun? :idunno:

Eliphalet Remington.

As was said, Eliphalet Remington and his sons Philo, Samuel and Eliphalet Jr built the guns.

They did not however design the gun.

Fordyce Beals designed the guns Remington produced starting with the First Model Beals Pocket Revolver thru the Remington New Army and Navy.

Although the big .44's are often called a "1858 Remington" because of the date of Beals Patent, the first one of this style was not produced until 1861. It was called the Remington-Beals Army Model Revolver.
In testing, the Military found that it had some shortcomings which were redesigned leading to the "Remington 1861" which wasn't made until 1862.
This model also had several things the Military didn't like (like the loading lever did not retain the cylinder pin which could allow the cylinder to fall out unexpectedly) so several features were again redesigned resulting in the Remington New Model Army (and Navy) which is the model currently imported from Italy.

That's the beauty of this site: Just when you think you know something, someone comes along that knows it better than you!
Thanks, Zonie, for the corrections.
I am smarter today than yesterday! :hmm:

Ok, now I'm confused.

The OP said he ordered the Cimarron/Uberti 1860 Army, and asked "who originally designed this gun".

I did order the Cimarron 1860 Army.

My next question is most likely of infinite stupidity. I see Remington mentioned as well as Colt but so far I cannot see who originally designed this gun?

The answers were about who designed the 1858 Remington.

I believe Sam Colt designed the Colt 1860 Army.

Did I miss something?

I was under the impression the OP was asking who designed the Remington...maybe I read the question wrong? :idunno:

I should have clicked on this thread earlier. I hope you didn't buy the Cimarron directly from them?

The biggest dealer they have is Buffalo Arms. They discount the Cimarron guns down to the regular Uberti price. I buy all my Cimarrons from them. Good people to do business with.

Then if you have a problem with the gun you can deal directly with Cimarron for repairs or parts. You never have to deal with Uberti.

The Cimarron guns do have a better fit and finish, and some internal parts are hardened better.

Capper,

I wish you had too! lol

Buffalo Arms is about 5 miles from my house!

I had never seen thier catalog, just a rumor that a BP shop exsited in our small town. Well I finally found it the other day, a warehouse, no sign out front. Have to knock on the door to be let in and WHAM! The place is chock full of stuff.(Not really set up for walk ins)

Ya I paid a little more for the gun than they sell it for.......live and learn..........I know where they are now,

As to who designed the 1860. I am/was confused as I see Colt and Remington mentioned but never saw where one or the other designed the 1860 Army.

Got it, Remington designed the 58' and Colt designed the 60'. Thats what I was looking for. Thanks
