I'm making a pair of woodland style moccsons from a pattern out of the book of buck skinning vol 1. did every thing it said to do. but it don't say how to do the heel part. all it says is mark were the heel is. so question is mark the heel do I cut the exses leather there? then sew up the back? that and hoe much do I leave for the heel tab?

If you have cut the pattern at the heel as illustrated in the book, when you've sewn the toe part together the heel part will come together where they should. You can slip the moccasin on your foot and check what the length needs to be before making your final cut at the heel, if you need. You then sew those together in a straight line, leaving the heel tab outside. The heel tab is about an inch long, maybe a tad less. You then fold it up and sew it to the back of the moc in a curved line, from ground to ground.

A different and slightly more complicated way which I tried on my second pair is to put welts in all seams and to leave the heel tab unattached, like this.

Yep, trim the heel, centering the seam and sew that up. Then, as the photo (figure 5) shows, fold up about 1/2" and sew that in place. I have also seen patterns that just leave that bottom flap without sewing and cut fringe in it. Oops, I see Spence beat me to the draw!

well I got them finished. look pretty good but I'm tring to deside to sew the flaps on or not. if I left them off would that still be pc?
