Hello Everyone-

I was wondering if anyone had a picture of a powder horn that looks like a fish. I friend at work and I were talking about these and he asked if I could make him one and I would like a picture for reference.

thanks

Are you talking about a Tansel style horn? Try searching on this site for "Tansel powder horns" or some variation of that. Also might try
Google or one of the links from the links page of this site (in "Articles-Charts-Links")
Good luck and Merry Christmas. Joe

nope....one that actually looks like a fish. the butt is its mouth and has glass eyes. I saw one years ago. I thought it was neat so it stuck with me all of these years.

There was an old original powder horn like the one your talking about that was offered on Ebay a few months back from one of the Super Venders. I think that he was askin $7500.00 for it, but don't know if he sold it. No maker named and really over priced in my opinion!

Looks like I will be flying solo on this one without any pictures. I just wasn't sure how the butt plug was done or the eyes.

Here's a couple of pics of a horn I made a little while back, hope they help.

The plug was trial and error, a little scraping and try the fit, a little more scraping and try again. Took a little while to get it right. The plug is actually oval and not round. If I would have fit the plug first I could have softened the horn and sized it round, but I was flying by the seat of my pants on this one!! The lobe on the plug is actually threaded so I can fill the horn from this end.
I cut a wedge out for the mouth with a hacksaw and finished it with a file. I also scraped around the lips to give it a sort of relief look, it kinda reminds me of a carp. Thanks for all the kind words guys they're much appreciated.

Not a problem Soggy, I'm glad you like the idea. I used a small gouge to make the scales, it helped to keep them uniform. I gotta admit, the plug had me baffled for about a year or so, then when I joined the forum you fellows helped me out with some ideas and presto I finally got it done. I'd love to see some other horns like this, it's cool to know that maybe I have inspired someone, Thanks. Wild Eagle

Thats awsome wildeagle. I would have never thought of it, let alone pull it off.
