Small-ish 8 pointer at 50 yds, 1.5-2.5 yr old...was overlooking a trail that winds through a bottom and crosses a deep drainage ditch...heard a rukus coming about 4:15pm and a spike comes fast walking up the trail down through the ditch and back up on high ground on my side...stops and looks back.

I know the drill so I get ready and sure enough, in a few seconds this other buck comes stalking along all stiff legged and stops across the other side of the ditch, where he proceeds to give the 1st buck the "glare'em down look" with hair all bristled out, etc.

It was absolutely deathly quiet, so quiet you could hear a leaf land on the dry leaves on the ground, and I just knew as soon as I set the set trigger they'd bust me.

But they were focused on each other so hard, when the trigger clicked the 8 pointer's near-ear swiveled towards me but he never took his eyes off the smaller buck.

Before I could shoot, he came down through and up to the other side of the ditch heading for the smaller buck, I was able to whistle stop him broadside, shot him in the heart.

He sprinted about 25 yards along side that ditch and when he fell, he fell down into it...ball made a complete pass-through...haven't recovered either of the .570 balls I've shot so far, but .58cal seems more than enough for eastern whitetails at typical woods distances.

Components were:
100grns Goex FFg
Oxyoke wonderwad
.018" TC prelubed pillow ticking
Hornady .570/278grn ball
Goex FFFFg prime
Black english flint
TC Hawken Flintlock
GM 1:70" Flint barrel
:)

WOW:RB TWO FOR YOU AND 0 FOR ME ,2 MORE WEEKS FOR PA ,TO OPEN GOOD LUCK :WERE THE PICTURES? :master:

Roundball..

Congratulations on your deer. I sure hope they cooperate this coming Saturday and I get to see if my .58 caliber will get a chance to speak. I will be shooting almost the same load as you,

100 grain Goex FFg
.570 Hornady Roundball
.018 pillow tick patch with moosemilk lube.

My .58 caliber is a caplock of course, but it will still be exciting.

Exciting is putting it mildly...no matter how many years I've hunted, when a buck steps into view as close as they are with bows or muzzleloaders, my heart still goes into overdrive and I have to make myself breathe, and control my excitement...flintlock, percussion, doesn't matter...it's a rush for sure...good luck this weekend!

Thanks...you'll get'em when your season opens...it was after dark when I got out, left the deer with a needy family out in the country, no pics

Ha ha..."58 seems to be enough for eastern white tails at typical woods distances..." !!! Kind of like a ten-pound double-jack "seems" to be enough for 16 penny nails...!!!

That wouldn't be kind of an...understatement? nawwww....

O.k. looks like we got a .58 caliber admiration society...I'll be heading out Saturday with my 1861, will be looking out for some Northwest White-tails, and either sex elk. Slight possibility of seeing a muley where we'll be.

I am a round-ball and black-powder guy but will be using a 456 grain REAL over 90 grains of T7. Haven't had the rifle that long, she shoots that combo real well so that's what were sticking with for the remainder of this season.

The Jaeger is "in the mail" right now so she'll be center stage next year. .62" Calibre.

The nice thing about large caliber round ball rifles is that they don't really damage a lot of meat on smaller and lighter game...not like using a 7mm Mag instead of a .30-30.

Boy you East-Coasters and your "eight-pointers"...out West that would be a 4X4 or a 4-pointer.

:peace:

yeah like stumpy said for n.y.....congrats for your deer....hope n.y. will be just as kind as pa was for me....will be using my .50 T/C hawken with the new stock i did......................................bob

Yeah, it's really just too much, overkill, etc...in fact, I was going to hunt it all season, but it's proven itself and since I don't have any place to hunt it where I might get a 100-125 yard shot, I've set it aside.

In it's place, I dragged out a .45cal TC Hawken flinter with a standard 1:48" barrel on it...back during the summer I discovered that it's a tack driver with 255grn maxi-hunters, so I figured I'd try that a few times...with it's 28" barrel, it feels like a carbine compared to that big heavy 33" barreled .58cal I've been using. ::
Good luck with your season
