Just finished this one. 8" x 1 1/4" blade of 01 steel with lightly aged finish and a through tang peened over iron butt cap. lugged iron guard and scalloped grip ferrule, curly maple grip with chip carving, finished with Fiebings leather stain and Minwax Antique Oil finish. Sheath is of 6/7oz vege-tan leather, sewn with linen thread. Iron plate with frog/hook are attached with clinched nails, and frog/hook is attached to the plate with a pin and silver braze. Cross hatching on sheath was hand incised. Hope you enjoy a look.

Really nice Wick. How do you peen over the end of the tang? In other words- it seems to me that the tip of the blade needs support. Do you heat the tang end or do cold? I have done a couple of stick tangs and didn't know how to do it so I threaded the end of the tang and attached a cap type nut but on the originals it seems the hammered over end is the more common/pc method.
Nice sheath too.

Hi Dave. I use a mild steel extension on the blade tang. Blade tang is about half way, an extension is lap fitted, peen pinned and silver brazed. I protect the blade in the vise with soft leather, clamp it in tight, a few inches below the grip, and cold peen in a closely fitted hole with bevels on the upper edges. With the simple 10xx steels, you can keep the tang from hardening, or anneal it and by-pass the extension, but 01 air hardens if heated to red, enough to make it resist peening, and the extension also saves steel.

I can certainly imagine owning it, in fact I would love to own it. Affording it might be the hard part.

Well I swear I posted to this thread yesterday but don't see so I guess I must have hit the wrong button!

Wick, this piece is awesome, it has a different flare than most of your pieces. I really like it! :hatsoff:

Not to rain on your parade, but check your state knife laws. In some states daggers are prohibited entirely and are treated like switchblades.

That is a real beauty Wick. I saw it over on another site and was hoping you would post more pics. Thanks, I love looking at your stuff and comparing the one I got from you to the latest one.

Thanks Wick- I feel less guilty about the way I am doing it. I have read that soft iron was forge welded- to save steel- and it would probably peen over pretty easy.
BTW- Outstanding work as always.
