Just found a New TC "Big Boar" at a local shop. I'm going to get it but was wondering how rare these are. How many where made and such. Any Ideas?

Wouldn't exactly call them rare...they were a production rifle from TC for a few years...1" x 26" x 1:48" barrel with QLA false muzzle to aid in aligning conicals.

It's a Renegade stock with a single trigger instead of the dual/set triggers normally seen on Hawkens and Renegades.....dubbed the Big Boar as it was supplied with the .58cal barrel.

IF it is in excellent condition, I would not pay more than $250 for it. I'm using that figure as that's the price I saw on one last year at a gun shop (this shop is usually pretty high on it's used guns also!)

While it's true that the Big Boars aren't in production anymore, that doesn't necessarily make them a rare or desireable collectors' piece. Though I will say that I'm seeing these a lot less frequently.

You could pick up a used .56cal smoothbore Renegade for under $125-$150 and put a brand new .58cal Green Mt. barrel on it. That would be a decent option AND you'd have the Dbl.Set Triggers as well. Because if you are just wanting a large caliber muzzleloader, you can find Zoli mfd. .58cal Zouaves for around $250 to $300. For around that same $250, you can get a brand new Underhammer in .50cal. For a little more you could get one of those guns in .58cal or .62cal

The most important things are, can you afford it, and do you want it? Needing it, only comes into play if you are hunting elk or larger game.

Good Luck on your venture!

This one has a 4 digit ser# with no recessed muzzle, brand new. Pre-warning. They want 350 out the door. I've placed it on layaway so I can pick it up after payday hehe. Been wanting one from way back.

Before I got interested in custom guns, the "Big Boar" was on my list of must haves. What slowed me down was discovering T/C Contenders. I long forgot about my ML's for a while but not enough to sell em. Now that I'm back with the smoke poles and just happen to come across an early production Big Boar, just had to get it. My wife was with me and that made things a bit sticky, but she accepted my plea's to let me get this one. Haha I'm going to pay through the nose for this some day I know it.

As the twist, mentioned above, is 1-48 how will this handle RB? I have not considered conicle for a 58 but if thats whats needed I'll just have to get a mould for one. I'm not crazy about the rubber pad but as this is an early peice I'll refrain from chopping it up.

FWIW...the Big Boar was introduced in '91 and the QLA didn't cut into production until '95, so it seems that rifle would have been assembled in the '91-'94 timeframe.

I have some TC 1:48" barrels in .45/.50/.54cals and found they shoot PRB's virtually as well as my 1:66" barrels.

I have a Hawken with a .58cal GM barrel on it but it's a 1:70"...have taken a few bucks last year and this year with the Hornady .570/279grn ball...devastating.

IMO, unless you're going after moose or grizzly, I'd leave the 550grn conicals on the shelf...the 279 ball should take most anything on the continent, and will have better velocity/trajectory as well.

Enjoy!

With my undying desire to return to Alaska to finnish my days, I will be crossing Moose and Grizz with a ML. It may not be this particular one (if I get my PC pre-40's Hawken), and Elk are on my list of ML targets. Need a good size Elk for a shirt, I would think moose would make a fine pair of pants  . I guess I'm screwy in the head but I want all my gear to be collected by myself, although I may have it tanned by someone else...

YET ANOTHER REASON I AM SO HAPPY TO HAVE COME ACROSS THIS SITE

:hmm: I paid a little over $200.00 bucks for my 56 S/B. It was new in the box when I got it.
No one in this area wanted a S/B gun. But me. :youcrazy:

That's still a pretty good price when you consider what a brand new current production T/C Hawken Rifle is selling for these days.

Have you shot yours yet? You can use 28ga shotgun wads and it will work great. I've tried the plastic wads, but they don't seem to work any better than the fiber and cardboard wads. Then you also would have to worry about cleaning the plastic out of the barrel too.

I use a 2 1/2 dram load equivalent. Since there is no choke, (in effect it is a cylinder bore), you may have to adjust the loads to get the best pattern with the shot size you decide to use. Even though there is no choke, the patterns are effective out to about 100ft (33yds), and that's not too shabby.

I've fired round ball too and it would work on deer within about 40-50yds. There was a T/C mould in .550 diameter made just for these guns. The Hornady swaged .535 diameter balls will work fairly well with heavy patching, but did not shoot as good as the bigger diameter .550 balls. You can get the .550 balls from Track of the Wolf.

These are really versatile guns. It's a shame that some people never give them a chance. But, it keeps the price lower on buying used ones, and that's the only way to get out-of-production guns nowadays. I might have to find me another one before they all disappear.

FWIW, A Green Mt. Drop In Barrel is about $175 shipped price from Track of the Wolf. You could also get a rifle barrel and have a two caliber set that would work for just about everything. AND it would still cost less than a new T/C Hawken.

:hmm: Now if I could just get by my wife I may get another barrel. :rotf: Yes I have shot some shot in this gun, does ok out to about 25 yds. and I have shot a 535 RB with a 18th patch and it will hold around a 5 inch group at 60 yds.
It a good time trying to get this gun to shoot good groups and tight shot patterns.

If anyone does that, I would be interested in purchasing the smoothbore barrel cheap.
Thanks

I will keep my eyes and ears open for a .56cal smoothbore barrel for you. The way I've been finding lots of complete & intact .56cal Renegades lately for decent prices, I'm bound to come across a barrel that is unwanted for a give-a-way price.

PS What would be your upper price limit on the barrel, so I'll know whether to get it or not?

There's several .56cal S/B Renegades on auctions right now...some for $199...buy it, resell the stock separately, the lock separately, and end up with the barrle for little of nothing.

PS: as an alternative, GM makes an outstanding .54cal smoothbore drop in barrel for the 15/16" size TC Hawken...and it has a nice long 33" barrel.

I got one in Flint, throws an outstanding pattern of #6's, and is extremely accurate with PRB...took 8 and 4 pointers with it this year...I've had a TC .56cal S/B but I like this GM barrel a lot more
