Here's a little box I finished yesterday (2" dia. at the base and 3.5" total height). I used the upper portion of a horn to form the body. It is thick enough there to turn the bands. The outer surface of the horn was primarily white and the horn became streaked with color as the layers were turned away. It gives the appearance that the bands were applied. Walnut looked best with the colors that were revealed.
The lid was kinda like what I visioned when I started. One of the nice things about turning is that the shape can evolve as the piece is turned. If I see something happening that I like, I go with it. Or, in most cases for me, if the tool slips, I get to decide how to repair it. Anyway, It's a lot more interesting than running a board through a table saw.
