Well, after Brasilikilt displayed his, I had to try.

I have never done so much scraping in my life!!

The base plug and stopper are cedar stained with "red iron oxide" spray paint that I sprayed on then wiped off. Three coats let it soak into the wood a little and also gave it kind of a worn look. Same with the stopper. The "repair" is some deer rawhide I had laying around. It needs to darken/age a little IMO, but use will do that (along with the BP residue that always seems to get all over my stuff). Also, thought I would show my completed shooting bag from an earlier post.

The strap is a wool strap I found at a market in North Iraq last summer.

Thanks for looking.

Wow! Your bag finished out really nice. I like the horn as well. Where did you pick that up at?

Got the horn at Fox Valley Leather. They have a box with usually about five horns in it at all times.

nice looooking, horn  and the bag is fantastic you do great work .how did you get the base of the horn white is it that color if you scrape it: i have never worked a buffalo horn but looks intersting.

The white on the horn is raw hide. There is a little white on a Buff horn, but these are mostly scratches and the deep cracks in the scale. Many of these scratches were difficult to get rid of, so I left them. I rubbed a little beeswax mixture into it and most of those disappeared.

Hey Goldhunter

I think the horn turned out great, and I'm glad to hear that I did a little to inspire it.

It is true that Buffalo horns are difficult because of all the scraping. A couple that I worked on I left slightly rough to give it that old rustic appearance because when I scraped them completely smooth, they looked too much like plastic!

Is the rawhide to cover up an actual repair, or is it just for appearance?

If you want, I'll share the method I use to make the base plugs look worn and old in just a few minutes.

You did quite a good job!

Goldhunter,
The horn looks great! The pouch
looks FANTASTIC  :applause:
snake-eyes :hatsoff:

It covers up an actual crack. When I pulled out the sizer plug, I torqued it a little and the horn cracked about an inch (think I maybe scaped it a little thin there). :shake: So I let some wood glue flow into the crack an dry and then put a good coating of beeswax over it. The horn was totally air tight at that point but I didn't want the crack to show. Thought the raw hide would be a good touch.

Glad you like it!

The rawhide alone would have fixed the crack. Pretty amazing how much force it exerts as it dries.

I figured it would. Just needed that extra "warm and fuzzy" with the glue and beeswax.

Cool indeed!
You guys have any knowledge that did the mountain men have screw tip horns??
