 After an untimely accident with my last bottle of india ink, I had quite a job finding another bottle. After I had just about exhausted all possible options ; stationary stores, art supply dealers, craft shops etc. I found just what I need sitting on the shelf gathering dust at the local Wal-Mart store (less than $ 3.00 )
It seems to be ok...........time will tell

This one is a gift for a friend............an avid deer hunter and hopefully a new black powder convert

Really nice work!

I've never tested it, but a good friend's great granddad did scrimshaw on sperm whale teeth back in the late 1800's, and they've got several examples. He used lamp black rather than India ink. He turned up the wick on a kerosene lamp to make smoke, then scraped the inside of the chimney to collect lamp black.

I've never tried it, and especially on a horn so white, but it's always intrigued me.

Have you (or anyone else) tried it?

The lamp black is powder. Dip a piece of paper toweling, or a bit of rag you don't mind throwing away, in oil, and then touch it to the lampblack, and use that to apply it to the scribed horn. Put it on as you would black shoe polish, letting the polish fill the scratches. Then use clean paper to wipe the excess off. You should be done. It next to impossible to get that lamp black out of the lines. Then finish the horn surface with an oil finish, or several coatings of wax, or both.
