Picked up this little rifle to add to my underhammer collection thinking it was a rendition of the fairly recent Allen Foundry design. Bought based on some small photos but I was blown away when it arrived. I've never seen an action quite like this one, although it is stamped with an "A" on all parts??? It's much older than I thought originally too. Came with interchangable .45 PRB barrel and 20 gauge shotgun. Really nice piece of lumber too....pictures don't do it justice.

Anyways, I have exhausted my search trying to find a similar underhammer and while I know not a big following here....but anyone have a clue who might have produced this action or am I in one-off territory here? It's a sweet little design and adjustable to ounces if so desired. Thanks.

At least I'm not crazy  I know Mr. Allen started Allen Foundry so maybe one of his early or custom designs??? I know his commonly seen guns don't have adjustable triggers....but the coil mainspring (and "A" markings..LOL) seem to be a dead giveaway.

Is he still around? I know he's influenced many things and lots of his guns around....but I know little of the man. Thanks again.

That's a beauty jonboyb.

How does the trigger feel? Crisp letoff? What would you guess the pull weight to be?

I'm not sure what I'm looking at in that last picture. Can you tell me what it is?

well if I know anything about Underhammers?? you are looking at the inside of the frame and it is showing you the sear spring, that is anchored there.. to push down on the 'sear bar' that comes up from the back of the lock-works..

But hey, what do I know

You got suckered! :shocked2: You should send that old gun to me for safe disposal, you never know what could happen.....you might get a scratch on it, the blueing may fade.
Sooo you should consider parting with it
You do have a very nice gun, and make no apologies for posting here.
Thank you for doing it.

Thanks KC. I should have realized that.

I had it in my mind that the trigger/hammer group was a fully complete stand alone unit. Didn't spot there was no sear return spring in that group.

yes, the coil spring jumped out at me as well. I had talked to Pete several years ago a few times. I have purchased several of his box lock actions. He was a good guy to deal with. years latter, I understood that his daughter was taking over more of the company?? Not sure.

Thanks everyone! I'll try to address the questions.

I'd say around 4 lbs if you back the screw completely off the sear, and maybe 1 lb or even less adjusted to minimum pull....its scary down that low anyways. Surprisingly....the trigger is really crisp with no creep (once the trigger is in contact with the sear that is....there is no trigger spring so it's got a little jiggle till it makes contact :) )

Well darn it....the finish is already faded. Might as well keep it and shoot it now :haha:

I plan to keep digging but maybe someone might have some recent info. I did find an email address....but I hate sending blind emails to people.

Well...sent the email and just got a call from Mr. Allan.....extremely nice fellow and a pleasure to talk with. He's never seen an action like this one, but he was very interested in it. He's sending the photos around to some of his compadres to see if we might figure this out
