It’s been a while since I built a powder horn. I have several to start and finish… one in particular I’ve been gearing up for, last year LME on this sight gifted me a beautiful large horn blank, so I’m tuning up in preparation of building that horn.
The horn im knocking the rust off myself with is going to be plain, but elegant, it’s smallish but will be nice…I’ve started it already today, here’s progress pics if anyone wants to see them..

Here it is on all it’s glory, base plug was dyed fairly dark.I blued the staple as well as the steel pins. I left some of the natural gouges, marks and imperfections in the body of the horn. I’d like this to look “used”. I’m not 100 percent sold on the color yet, that may change. This one will be up for sale tomorrow. I need to make the spout plug yet. Feedback is always welcome.

I used a mixture of colors from feiblings leather dye and I think some vinagroon as well. I steel wooled it back and applied another coat. I’m pretty sure I steel wooled it again. I do different things with different horns….I never do the exact same color, or dye. I made this back in august or September of last year. Here’s a different one I done for my dad..he wanted a rustic, large horn..

Thanks for letting me know. Your dad's horn is beautiful also. Did you steel wool it first before you applied any dye? And after you were done, was any finish or wax applied to protect it? Much appreciated.
