Just rec'd a very nice underhammer fowler based on the one on p. 70 in Nicholas Chandler's book on underhammers.

ca. 1833 20 bore fowler, 42" barrel on it....a pleasure to shoot.

Cody,
Very nicley done, as all of Rod's work is. I have one of his pistols and have seen others and have been impressed with his work for a while. The pistol without a trigger guard I can live with, being used primarily at the range. In the field with a fowler I would prefer to have a guard in place to prevent the trigger being snagged. I realize he has reproduced an existing piece but that is just my preference, not a reflection on his work.

It certainly has sleek going for it.

Thinking about the lack of guard: the hammer full forward the guard's not needed. The hammer back or at half-cock it's "shielding" the trigger.

I think I could live with it.

Ship it to me and I'll give you a full report how it works in the field. ;-)

The simplicity of the action is one of the beauties of the Ruggles patent. The hammer has a spur on it that acts as the tumbler, with a trigger guard in place the hammer couldn't function. With a sub-halfstock on it, this gun is very light weight even with a 42" barrel on it.

Too late, Stumpkiller....I've already field tested it :blah:

No website, but he answers his email pretty regularly. I'll send it to you in a message.

Smoothbore,
Rod can be reached at; [email protected]. He responds to emails and is a great guy to deal with. If you google him, I think I remember a website showing his wares and some prices.

Smoothbore,
Heard from Rod last evening and I was mistaken regarding a website. He will look forward to hearing from you, and anyone else, on his email.

I see a hole in the buttplate, does that indicate the buttstock is attached by a through bolt?

Yes, just like the original fowler it was based on there is a metal rod that extends through the length of the butt from the action and the butt is secured to the rod with a screw.

There are photos in Chandler's book that shows this in detail on Ruggle's patent buggy guns/rifles.
