Out to the range yesterday with my new T.O.W. trade gun.
It was hot, and muggy. I got out early, about 8:30.
Almost nothing like that first time feeling the gun push back into your shoulder and seeing the hole in the target. .600 round balls make big holes!
Worked on loads. Started at 60 grains of FF, it was hitting about 4 to 5 inches below P.O.I. Up to 80 grains, and about 2 inches low. All of these at 25 yards.
Went out to 50 yards. This time shooting 2 liter pop bottles filled with water. They never had a chance

I was shooting yesterday as well. My Lancaster was hitting to the left but it was so hot that I left it that way for now. I had shot a lack luster course earlier and wanted to play with that gun too, but gave up after 12 shots. Just too hot and dry.

Glad to hear of your successes with that new gun though.

Now all the questions...

Is this one you built yourself?

How were you loading?

Did you cast your own ball?

By POI, I assume that you meant POA. (Point of Aim) Do you have a rear sight?

Curious smoothbore minds want to know.

Yes, I meant Point of Aim. My bad
Yes I built it myself
No rear sight
I do not cast. May try this in the future however
60, then 70, then 80 grains of Goex FF, patch lubed with Maxi Lube, .600 round balls.
This is my first smoothbore flintlock. I was amazed at how easy it is to load a smoothie compared to a rifled bore.

In my .62, I was using 65 Grains of 3F Goex then an over powder wad and then a half of a Crisco lubed cushion then a .600 ball and then an over shot card.

I had tried using patches on the ball years ago, but found that these did not really help.

I cast my own ball from a Lee .600 mold which is available through special order. Mike's Reloading had some at 802 254-5296.

I lived in Valparaiso, Indiana years ago, but moved south to escape the cold. I was working in Gary and Hammond, so there were other reasons as well...

Hope that your smoothbore makes meat in the coming season!

Midsouth shooter ssupply has Lee .600 rd ball moulds as a regular item for around $17. I have taken to gluing my cushion wad to the thick overpowder wad before i lube them. Then i only have one thing to put down the barrel instead of two seperate operations.

Neat! I also went out to the range yesterday afternoon with my new Bess. You're right about it being hot, sunny, and humid. I was the only one there. :youcrazy: I got off 6 shots off-hand before the heat baked both me and the barrel. The black powder hung thick in the air before settling onto the sweat on my arms. I even managed to hit the 18 inch square target 3 times at 50 yds. :: That .715 roundball and 80 grains of 2F make big noise and even bigger holes.

Did the same this Monday. I bought a TVM Fowler that the previous owner cut down to a 30" barrel for deer hunting. Bought it in April, this is the first chance I got to take it out.

Used 80 grains of FFg, card, wad, bare ball and another card instead of an over shot wad.

At this range, you have to fire from a bench. When I fire a fowler from the bench, I am always 2 to 3 inches low. This is due to a miserable sight picture. Standing, I hit Pop cans out there all day.

The wonderful thing about that wide stock on a fowler is that you can shoot it all day. O put about 30 balls through it and no stiff shoulder.

This is a 35 yard target. Interestingly enough, the top hole that looks like a flyer is actually made by a 20 gauge wad.

Yep. Select image from the Instant UBB Code menu box at the lower right when editing or posting and paste the address of the image in the "add image" windo that pops up. It has to be a maximum of 700 pixels in either direction and on a image hosting site like Hunting101 or Photobucket.

Valpo is a nice little college town.
Lake county however, should be deeded over to Illinois :)
