New to BP shooting with a gun that has ignition issue or me?

Newb to BP guns
The gun in question is a Pedersoli Tryon 54 cal., loaded with 60 grs of triple 7 ffg powder with a ball and lubed patch on top. I read where to start low and work up on powder charge but is 60 grs too low for proper ignition? Just purchased the firearm here on this site. Took it apart the nite before for a good cleaning and inspection. Took the nipple off also and used the cleaner rod on the nipple wrench to make sure nipple was open and bore scope the barrel which was beautiful inside. Anyone got any advice for help?

60 grains should ignite the same as any other charge. It could be the percussion caps are weak or the flash channel blocked by something. Are the powder and caps new?

I noticed the flash hole in the nipple to be about the size of the wire in a bread tie, sure seemed awful small. Gonna clean everything again tonight and drill that hole out a size or 2 or just order another one . Since i made post ive went thru a ton of old post on here about ignition troubles and triple 7 powder. This site is awesome.

Gonna clean everything again tonight and drill that hole out a size or 2 or just order another one . I assume you ran some patches down the barrel to remove residual oil when you cleaned it?
Did you snap a couple of caps with the muzzle pointed down at a blade of grass or a dry leaf to see if the flash channel was clear before you loaded it?
60 grains is a fine starting point for a .54.
Triple 7 is harder to ignite than the holy black. Perhaps your caps are weak.

Sounds like a good plan. After i clean tonight im gonna perform what you advised. TBH an oily barrel was what i first thought of when it didnt ignite.

Not at my house atm. When i get home i will do more checking. Just so everyone knows after i cleaned it i took the inspection screw out under the nipple and put my borelight in hole and could see light in the barrel. I think im gonna find oil residue under the nipple when i check it tonight. That barrel under the nipple i didnt think about swabbing out with a q tip and bet it was full of oil.

I would advise against drilling the nipple, the small hole focuses the flame from the cap and reduces blow back.

Listen to Phil! There is something else wrong. If you can't figure it out get help before you create a problem that is harder to fix!

Excellent advice and after i pulled the ball and patch i turned the barrel down and no powder ran out so im pretty sure i had too much oil residue and going to clean it all up tonight and will post a follow up tomorrow or the next day. Thanks for allllllll the expert advice.

As others have mentioned above, run an alcohol patch down the barrel a couple of times before loading, snap a couple of caps to make sure the fire channel is clear also.

I assume it is a chambered breach like most Pedersoli rifles, do a search (upper right) for chambered breach and you will find lots of information on how to deal with it.

Drilling the nipple....not needed.

10 gr. is enough to ignite with a clear touch hole and proper pan powder*. That's a load that I typically shoot off in my basement for testing purposes after having a gun and lock fully disassembled. No ball, of course, just a wad over powder. Upon ignition it mostly just goes "poof", makes smoke and shoots the charred wad out 10 or 15 ft.

* re-reading your OP I see you're got a percussion gun, but the same applies if you've got a clear nipple hole and your cap ignites.

go to 3f trip 7 if you still have problems put 5grains 4f in first, some guns dont shoot trip seven well because of poor breach plug design

Drilling the nipple probably (more likely certainly) ain’t necessary. Before loading, make sure (however you want to do it) that the bore, chamber and inside of the nipple are clean and dry and there is no oil there. Then it won’t matter what powder you use.

If there is one absolute in muzzleloading, it’s that oil is the biggest cause of misfires especially in percussion guns. Just my .02 cents.

if you want less problems always store bp guns with barrel down that way any left over oils will not sit in drum or breach

There's lots more smarter hunters on here than me, but i do bore out my ******* so that I can use fake powders that are available in Montana where I can't buy black. I was a mechanic of sorts for many years, did a lot of different things in my life and i have a lot of stuff to work with, so I took my wire bits and measured the size of the hole in the new ******* for my percussions and they measured .026. I couldn't get constant ignition so I started experimenting and discovered if I would bore them out to .030 that they would work all the time. It didn't bother shooting black as i also own some of that for my flintlock, but I guarded it almost religiously so I stick to 777 pretty much.******* probably don't last as long, and i hate that guy that keeps blacking out my nipples, but I don't load real hot and if I happen to get blow back on a hammer I know it's time to change. I don't shoot pounds either just a pound once in awhile.

NEW DAY

After i did an extensive cleaning and inspectionn i put 70 grs triple 7 2f and a lubed patch and round ball down the tube and still no ignition after using 2 #11 cci caps. I removed the inspection screw under the nipple and poured in powder there and BOOM DADDY i had ignition. Figured maybe i blew the cobwebs out and loaded again and pop, no ignition, remove screw and pour in powder and BOOM, wife said house shook, lol. So i have been digging in the archives on here and saw a couple of articles on here with some guns being finicky on 2f with T7. Any other input will be appreciated, would 3f be my next solution to try to cure this ignition problem,
