I've recently been trying to cultivate a broader collection of ML longarms. I like oddball things, and so...

This guy just arrived today.
.45 cal (or should it be 51ga?) smooth rifle.
Pretty light and well handling. Previous owner said she shot .440 rb with a .010 patch with good results. I figure it will make for a nice informal shooter for my 50 yd backyard range.
Whle I'm certainly no expert in the subject, this is by far the smallest bore smooth rifle I've encountered. I've generally understood them to be .54-62cal.
Any ideas as to why someone would make this? (Welding seems imply it's homepsun). Or what kinda shooting it would be best for?
Pics below.
Thanks for looking.
Cheers,
dgfd

That is a cool find ! Any markings at all ? Proofmarks under the barrel maybe to give you an idea of origin.

If you follow brittsmoothy and his hunts here on the forum you will see that the small caliber smoothbores are not a handicap. At least not in his hands.

I don't follow you on the welding

Thanks
O.R.

I'll take a look under the barrel if i can. It's pinned, oddly enough for a halfstock.
There are welding seems on the rib, ramrod pipes, and the grip are all welded. Nicely done welds, so not sure if they show up in the photos

Britsmoothy,

Very cool. Thanks for load ideas.
What's the model of the one in the picture there?

Twenty eight gauge Muzzle loader is definitely a gun I would love to own. I shoot a 28 gauge wingmaster for pheasant, rabbit and quail and would love to try one in a frontloader.

Both are wanted for pestering Varmints & Vermin and considered too be armed and dangerous!

If you wear feathers or fur, approach with “EXTREME “ Caution!

Jess looks guilty, how many other dogs you know that carries a gun...

I’m not so sure about the other Guy....🥸
