Picked up this nice project Hawk for $10 this weekend. Needs polished and engraved. Going to shave the handle to a round contour, and drill the handle and bowl. Made up a batch of vinegaroon to stain it with, maybe add some brass tacks...

I have a long drill bit and a "T" handle. I have reference marks at either end. Hopefully hand turning the drill bit will get the job done. The handle will be secured in a vise..Wish me luck. Going to drill it before I get to far into the project. Once its drilled, all the rest of the mods will be completed...

I've had better luck drilling the long hole by affixing a bolt or screw into one end of the handle and then into your drill chuck. Clamp the long bit into your vice, first with just a couple of inches protruding and then progressively longer. Running your drill, with handle affixed, push it into the long bit until halfway through the handle, then switch ends. With any luck you should meet in the middle. If not , go to a larger diameter bit and repeat the process.

I've tried to do it the way your going to try a couple times with no success!... Then I found out that most of these handles were made of two halves. ___ I took a length of curly maple and cut in half on a table saw. Then lowered the saw blade so only about 1/16" proud for my channel. __ Adjusted the saw fence so the cut (kerf) would be centered down the middle. Made one cut the length of each half and glued halves together with the saw cuts matched in the center and just clamped the halves back together watching to match the wood grain with the correct side.__ I had a neat drill bit starter hole in the ends and the next day, I ran a 3/16" drill bit in each end of my wood and my hawk pipe stem was ready to shape and finish!

You really don't have to run an extra long drill bit down the stem, as no one will know that the inside channel is round, except you!

Decided to forgo all of the fancy handle treatment, and just make this into a nice polished hawk. I seem to have misplaced My long drill bit to parts unknown.
I stained the handle with some vinegaroon, and then added a coat of Tru-Oil to it. I left a small section bare, and a small section pre oil, just to give everyone who has never tried this type of stain a general idea of what the process looks like..

Finish looks dull and chalky. The surprise is when the oil is applied, and a nice walnut color emerges...
