So, I went to ship a nice longrifle today. Thought a square profile box with extra padding would be the ticket. Foolishly had it priced SHIPPED. Well, besides the $15 fee for over 30", there is also a new "irregular volume" fee of $15 now. Just brought it back home to regroup. From here out, if buyers want their guns to arrive quickly and in good order, they need to be willing to shoulder all or some of the cost of getting it to them. Not sure why Louis Dejoy isn't in jail. No doubt his stock in companies that compete with USPS is going up. Cleptocracy at its finest. Rant over.

When I ship buckskin pants to our northern neighbors I usually tell them I ship free to the lower 48 and what it normally cost me and ask them to foot anything over that price.

I have also been hit with the recent USPS price increases. Cost me $123.00 to ship a long rifle from CT to WA priority mail with insurance. From now on, any gun I sell the buyer has to pay the shipping, or at least split it with me.

I don’t use USPS anymore…quit using them for about 4 years now. I seldom pickup mail at the mail box…mostly junk mail and an occasional bill notification…bills get paid online.

UPS, FEDEX, etc…but I’m done with USPS…

Our UPS contract store just folded their tent, so not an option. Sure, you can have them pick it up - for an additional fee and wait for them. In small towns USPS is still best option. And in my experience they break fewer guns than FedWrecks or Oops!PS. YMMV.

All shipping rates are getting out of hand. I have found with USPS 'click and ship' anything over 12" long is heavily penalized. Sold a long gun recently and sent the buyer a guesstimate of the cost beforehand to avoid any misunderstandings. I had to send a modern shotgun back to the manufacturer for repairs. They sent me shipping label but UPS went hincky on me and gave me a hard time. Eventually they took it. When it came back I saw the label said it cost the company $135.00 to return to me. They sure didn't make any profit on this banger. I have some items I would like to sell on this forum. But, I don't feel right charging the buyer $20.00 shipping for a $20.00 item. 🤬

Sadly i must add to this. Been using a shipping service that allows all USPS and UPS services. About a week after shipping an 8 pound box via UPS that was exactly 48x7x4 i got a separate unexpected additional charge for $12.75. When questioned they reported the box was 49x9x3 and hence the additional charge. All our boxes are custom made to exact dimensions. I placed a dispute on my credit card and will watch. I know disputes cost both merchant and card companies $$$. In essence if you are .000001 over 48" they will extort/charge this extra fee. If this continues I see average long gun shipping will be close to $100 soon and a big blow to our economy.

I just shipped a 12lb, 48” long box from Vermont to Nebraska for 65.00. That’s insured and with adult signature. UPS and FedEx were much higher. USPS has never lost a package, and if I have a issue, the nice lady behind the counter is more than willing to help. Try that with UPS or FedEx!
I guess it’s better because I am in a small, rural town.

I agree never had a probable with the USPS, just order a new ram rod for the 54, out of TOW 33.5" and a bottle of browning 13.99 UPS, which I didn't think was all that bad. Being its so long.

A little pearl from our ex friends at UPS:

"Additional Handling can apply whenever a package is longer than 48 inches or if its second longest side is greater than 30 inches long. It can also apply if the package weighs more than 50 pounds, if the item is not fully encased in a corrugated cardboard box, or any package with its length (longest side of the package) plus girth [(2 x width) + (2 x height)] combined exceeding 105 inches. For the package, the dimensions were 28 x 23 x 22 in which does qualify for the Additional Handling charge."

USPS is more reliable there is a real Human to talk to if there is an issue not UPS or God forbid Fedex .I have had several packages marked Adult signature required just dumped at the front door from Fedex and UPS not mention lost packages or weeks delayed several packages damaged in shipping Fedex and UPS deliver to an address USPS delivers to a person at an address Thats a huge difference

Just now got now letter with a USPS MO in it that was postmarked 28 March 2022. Makes me leery.

FedEx seems not to have its own employees but all Contractors for pickup and delivery. They do not last long around here and disappear as fast as they appear. I have totally discontinued shipping anything via FedEx after the last Fiasco as one or more of members here may attest to.
