Howdy everyone. Just about finished with my first build. So need to start thinking of shooting supplies. No shops in my little town, so will need to order.

So what will I need to get started ? Does anyone make a starter kit ?

It's a Pedersoli 50cal carbine. Plan on using round balls.
Also, anyone know what size nipples I will need ?

Thanks in advance for your help

@Wizzard1962,

One source of course is to go to the Davide Pedersoli web site and see what they have to say. Link below
Davide Pedersoli | Reproduction and sale of historical muzzle-loading and breech-loading weapons. (davide-pedersoli.com)

The other source is to go to the Forum's General Information Forum and read the "Useful Information" topics in the General Muzzle Loading Forum. Many more insights will be found there.

Pedersoli has been using 1/4-28 nipples as I have seen on the Pedersoli web site.

Don't worry about a starter kit. If there is anything like that usually you pay for items you don't need.
Think load, shoot, clean, and whoops I dry balled, sight adjustment
Load..........powder, ball, patching, patch knife, patch lube, caps, capper, starter, measure, ramrod with cross pined loading tip threaded for accessories .
Shoot....... Safety glasses, hearing protection, targets, paper and pencil, hand tacks or stapler, spotting scope is nice if you can afford, nipple wrench
Clean........ black powder solvent for field, cleaning patches, jag, paper towel, box for everything, gun oil, rag for your hands
Whoops you dry balled..........ball puller, vice grips, WD40
Sight adjustment..........I do not know what kind of sights your carbine will have but if you have to bump them, you will need something for that.
This will get you going.
Enjoy the new experience of building, shooting your own!

Track of the Wolf is a good source for shooting supplies, as is The Gun Works/Muzzleloading Emporium.
Buffalo Arms, Graf&sons are sources for black powder and # 11 percussion caps.
You can use substitute powders such as Triple 7 or Pyrodex if you can't get real black.

@Wizzard1962,

Here's a mention of a few sources of black powder supply kits that I posted about a year ago.

There's lots of places, but here is a thread on the Forum that can help by listing the supplies. I'm not a fan of the starter kits. Look over the lists and go to some place such as Track of the Wolf, and other vendors. Where are you located? There may be a local gun shop that would have the supplies. Right now, finding powder and caps can be hard to locate.

RMC Ox-Yoke has a decent cleaning/loading package but is short of the powder measure.

Larry (Omaha) pretty much covered it but I would offer one extra little bit of advice - In addition to a ball puller, buy a CO2 powered "unloader" you will soon be sooo glad you did! I used baller pullers for over two years before I got smart and bought my unloader. Man do I wish I had done that sooner! An unloader is so much easier and SAFER to use and that goes double if you are new to muzzleloaders.

You need a good heavy shooting pouch to start with, I have used a double bag hunting pouch for 35 years & I really recommend it. A good powder horn that holds 1/4lb at least, patches,caps,oil, cleaning jags, brass or plastic funnel to fill the horn, a cleaning rod, nipple wrench, nipple pick good screwdriver small brass hammer & a patch lube just for starters. You have the tools to repair your rifle since you built it. You also don't need to buy the pouch and horn yet, you can use a tackle box to load out of. I personally use only spit patches, the lube is messy and if you ever put a pre-lubed patch in your mouth when your reloading in a hurry to put a 2nd shot in a deer

Everyone has given you great advice & i will just repeat what they said but i will add that if you are looking for a hunting pouch (shooting pouch) get a double bag pouch. I've used mine for 35 years now & it's been a rough 35 years. It has 6 little pockets sewn inside that holds patches,flints, patch worm & ball worm plus artificial sinew & a couple needles. The front bag holds ball bag & several loose balls & bag of spare flints & the rear bag holds my leatherman tool flint& steel & a tin with cord for snares, a few fish hooks & line & small jewelers files. Powder horns,short starter & measure hang on the strap. If you check with a few Indian craft companies you can find a kit for one or design your own it's worth it

Thanks Autie1876. That is alot of Great information. I truely appreciate you and everyone for sharing your knowledge and wisdom.

Thinking of posting a want ad in the accessories buy-sell. Bet folks have some extra items laying around they dont need or use.

Powder horns , ball starters , powder measure , nipple pick. etc. You might like the ones you can make better than commercial stuff. It's all good... :ghostly:
