Didn't think the weekend was ever going to get here...making smoke at first light tomorrow morning with a pretty refinished gunstock.

Completed the refinish job on a like new/mint 70's vintage early design TC Hawken stock and moved a proven, .45cal x 15/16" x 32" x 1:66" Flint barrel to it...so I'll really only be christening the stock...however, it has a nice long LOP and more drop at the heel...fits great.

This year's goal has been to inprove my shooting skills offhand standing, so that's how I've been spending my Saturday mornings so far this year...I stunk at it but am making a little progress...I still stink, just not as bad .

Hope everybody gets to make some smoke this weekend!

Just wondering, you ever make smoke at last light in the evening?

I guess if you mainly hunt mornings, it seems right to practice in the mornings as well, that makes sense to me...

If I do it's going to be in the rain. Been raining for a week and a half and looks like more is coming.
Oh well at least we ain't got locust.

Not why I practice that early...I just like that cool fresh quiet part of the day the best...usually see a lot of wildlife on the 30 miles drive...get up at 5:30am, shooting by 7:00am, range is almost always deserted and have the place to myself...back at the house cleaning the rifle by 10:00-11:00...life is good!

I'm beginning to think if flintlocks, vent liners, and powder "back in the day" were as good as todays products, there might not have been as much interest in developing caplocks as there was.

I saw deer & turkey enroute to the range early this morning, and was shooting by 7:00am.

.45cal Flintlock
20grns Goex 3F + 30grns PyrodexRS layered loads
Black English flint
TC prelubed pillow ticking, dampened with Hoppes No9+
Hornady .440s.

50 shots
No blowing down bore
No wiping between shots
Cleaned the lock with an alcohol rag twice during the shoot.
Never knapped the flint or flipped it over.
Never had a kerlatch, slowfire, hangfire, etc.

6" steel hanging circle plate at 40yds, offhand standing, about 40 shots into a 2.5" center, the rest scattered around enough to expand the group size to 4"...(includes a couple of brain malfunctions)

An absolutely fantastic early morning drive and range session with a Flintlock!

Good onya Roundy,
went out myself this mornin'.
Knocked off a 12 hr nightshift at 7am, at the range and shootin' by 9.30. Cool, sunny morn, no wind, great company. Won my first BP comp today (13 shots, best 10, freestanding at 50 yards), scored a 70/100, not bad with the nightshift wobbles and 2 shots never made the paper (drying patches, i'll learn). BBQ lunch, a few beers, what a great way to spend a Sunday.
Cheers, Smokey. :)
