Well today was my day . We planed on heading up the mountain at first light but after a couple cups of coffee the light beat us so we took our time .once we got to the top as things would have it , someone else was parked in the spot we normally hunt . after some thinking and complaining we decided to drive the roads a bit . Seeing nothing by 10 we started back down the mountain but upon going past the cabin that we normally stay at on opening morning we decided to drive up on the ridge and maybe do some spotting .

Well kelly my partner decided to try out our new wing bone calls that we had made with advice from the muzzle loading forum . First cluck and we got a gobble down the ridge some . I tried mine which for some reason has a little higher pitch and the tom responded again . Now mind you I have not been practicing with my bone call so my call sounds some what like a hen that smokes to much . After about 30 min of working this tom I finally got a distant look at him and his hens as the moved over the next ridge . Kelly decided that he wanted to work this tom some more and tried to cut him off . I myself made my way back up to the scout . Once back I pulled out an old slate call and gave a couple quick clucks and got a response up the draw a bit .
WOW !!!!!two tom so I sat down with my spy glass to see if I could spot my tom up the draw .

After about 45 min kelly showed up with news that the tom he was working had been small so he backed off LMAO

That is AWESOME!!! You got me fired up that is for sure! I am FINALLY off being oncall at work and hope to hunt a few times this week.

Congrats on your outstanding hunt.

I know absolutely nothing about Elk, but turkeys do have a very distinct pecking order. There is (usually) a "boss" Tom who gets most of the ladies, and then satellite Toms who try to sneak what they can when he's not looking. It sounds like you killed the boss.

Congratulations on a fantastic Tom! It's funny how turkeys can beat the heck out of you some days, and then they seem to have a death wish on others. You certainly capitalized on the opportunity, with no mistakes. And, to do it traditional style is an even more impressive achievement! :master:

I'd love to hear more details about your gun/load.

Thanks for the details Captchee. I just got a Type "C" in .62, so your info is very interesting.

Nice job Captchee! Good story. All the more impressive because you did it in primitive garb. :front:
