It's getting impossible to find Black Powder in my area(eastern Iowa).
I shoot a Lyman GPR 50 cal. It hates Pyrodex!
I'm just getting back into black powder shooting after a long lay off and not familiar with the new powders. Has anyone tried them in their GPR's.
Any help will be appreciated.

I would think you should be able to order it from TOW. We bought 25 pounds from them a couple years ago, I'm thinking of ordering another 25 pounds before the next election.

Have your powder delivered to your door from Powder Inc., Graff & Sons...There are many more listed in our resource section.
It's cheaper by far than the substitutes and the UPS guy hands it to you on your doorstep.

I can't find BP anywhere in my area. But there's a fairly new GOEX distributor about 160 miles from my house. It's in Marksville, LA - called Jack's Powder Keg. The guy is a Judge by the name of Angelo Piazza.

I called him a few days ago. Real nice guy. He's into reenactments - Civil War, 1812, Battle of New Orleans, etc. He became a distributor to assure a powder source for his reenactment club and others.

After our get acquainted chat, he says he sells GOEX by the case for $9.45 a pound. Doesn't like to break cases, but he will. Lots of five pounds or more for ten-something a pound.

Then he says to me; "You ought to buy a 24 lb bulk bag - that's only $9.00 a pound. You should stock up now because I have a notice from GOEX that they are going to have a price increase in September, but it didn't say how much."

I say "I've never heard of a bulk bag of GOEX".

He says, "Yeah, it comes in a heavy duty vinyl bag and it's actually 25 lbs of powder, but marked 24 lbs. and thats what you pay for. Some guys want the cans, but most of us use the bag. And a one pound can of powder includes the weight of the can. With the bulk bag you just take out whatever you want, roll up the top of the bag, seal it with a twist tie, and store it in a military surplus ammo can. It ain't gonna go bad."

So now, he's mailing me the paperwork I need to fill out to buy the stuff, and I'll have a year's supply pretty soon.

You can get some in Davenport at Upper Mississippi Valley Mercantel. I believe it is around 18th st. Leon

i have been buying powder in the balk bag for years. i bunch of us would got together and buy one or two. and just weigh it out. we all had our own cans.

Upper Mississippi Valley Merchantile is on Washington Street a couple blocks south of Locust,I think. They are only there Monday nights from 6 till 8.

I wonder if the reason we dont have REAL black powder on the west cost is because the only "reinactments" we would have would be the panty burning hippies at Woodstock and the sucessfull invasion of America from Mexico... :hmm:

Hi Bill
I also live in Davenport Ia. I can't find BP around here either. I know of the Merchantile shop but they no longer sell BP. I do have some extra BP I could part with. I ordered some in last year. You could call me at 563 271-6911. Maybe we can get together and talk guns over coffee.

Bill. My Lyman GPR 50 does quite well with 90 grains of pyrodex select (2f). Like yours it doesn't seem to care much for regular pyrodex and only does moderately better with 777 but the select version was very accurate (and expensive). Fortunately I now have several lbs of goex 3f in stock and it's always on my list when I travel as the closest I can buy black powder is 300 miles.

There were a few places to get BP in the Portland area, most clube buy bulk every year or two and split it up.

You have to order it. Most places now ship 5 pound lots.
I also recommend you write you Congressmen and Senators and explain that the difficulty in buying BP is total BS and the restrictions need to be eased.

If you have been shooting P-dex much and have micro pitted the bore shooting BP may be very difficult.
I recommend doing a extended hot water, 120-140 degree, flush then flush with denatured alcohol to speed drying then oil. The fouling is very tenacious and corrosive.

Bill,
If you have some time there is a Cabela's in Prairie du Chien, WI which is about a 2 1/2 hr drive. I know when I travel any where and I'm within 50 miles of a Cabela's I make the detour.

Does the place in Hillsboro/Forest Grove still carry it, seems like it was a Thriftway store that had BP in a seperate area or something like that I haven't been there for 20 years or so, maybe they folded up
