Northstar west marking?

Got one from an estste.it's a chiefs grade .62.Barrel marked towards the breech " N*W. ". I was told there guns were never marked this way.

I'm no expert but only markings I've ever seen on them was the circle fox on top barrel flat and under the pan on the lock plate.

IIRC, there was some numbering on the bottom denoting the caliber but all other visible stamps were period & historically correct. This was the case for Bob and Matt (the last 2 owners), uncertain if Curly had other stamps (though I find this very unlikely).

Two guys, Bill Westcombe an Bob Rathburn owned the company between Curly and Matt, they called themselves North Star West, the headquarter was In the foothills of Northern, Ca. I do not know about the markings, just giving more info to the subject.

It has the sitting fox.I'm curious if it was a kit the owner built and just decided to mark it for reference .it's very faint.I had a Dolliver built 12g from a NSW kit and he did sign the top of the barrel

That's a possibility. As mentioned above, I've never seen or herd of the sitting fox markings except for caliber marks.

On a related note...has anyone heard any recent updates on how Matt's doing these days. Miss our ole Runnindog!

Keb, correct on the markings, also Barnett on the back of the lock. At least those are the markings on the kit gun I got from Bob Rathbun. flinch

The original Sitting Fox stamp got broke a number of years ago. It took some time and several attempts to have one made that was almost identical to the original to Matt's liking. That being said I cannot remember what Matt said to my question if there were guns made with out the Sitting Fox during the interim.

All, Not to complicate matters, but Green River Forge also used the Sitting/Circle Fox logo on their trade gun bbls.

I built many of the guns for Matt. That marking is not on them.
