As the title suggests my second attempt at a hunting/shooter's pouch is not so PC, but as I am wanting to learn what I can I designed a pouch that incorporated a few things I wanted to try out. Those were lining a pouch, using an "inlay" and lacing. Really the lacing came about because the elk hide and the thin leather lining made about 1/8" thickness which I didn't know if I could turn or not.

I did get a lot of lacing practice in ('though I need more), using three methods, i.e. single loop for the strap and flap, double loop for the body of the pouch and applique over the stitches attaching the strap to the pouch.

Comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks fer lookin' - Flint

I really like it. first pic I was trying to figure out what state outline that was as first glace then it hit me. Stitching looks good wish I could do that. Have an alligator hide I might try if I get the rifle built.

I'm originally from the Southwest, and you sure run across a lot of old lacing down that way. It wouldn't surprise me at all if someone found an original that was laced rather than stitched. Part of growing up down there is developing a soft spot for well-executed lacing. You nailed it for my tastes!

Thanks fellas, I 'preciate the kind words. I'm really enjoying working with the leather.

Swamp Rat: In case you haven't figured it out yet, that greenery above the beaver is supposed to represent one of his favorite foods - aspen leaves.

BrownBear: I have always loved the lacing on the leatherwork from the SouthWest. Some of the Mexican braiding and lace work is just simply amazing - total works of art!

dang thought that was the Hawaiian islands.
We don't have many beavers around here.
What are the dimensions of the bag? You know the U shape and the way the upper part of the bag is shaped it looks like it would ride just right on the hip and not swing around much while moving. Also all the lacing on the strap would help that too. If you don't mind how long id that lacing on the strap take?

no beavers?! what's going on ... I've seen beavers all over the place when I was in Maryland ... they were actually making their little pond thingies in low spots in the median between the lanes of the highway when I lived in the Carolinas ... clever and very persistent little buggers ... when the beaver pond finally silts up, you get a beaver meadow ... we have a boatload of them here in Vermont, but you have to know how to look for them - most of the flatlanders either don't know or don't care ...

anyway, i'm sorry to hear that you haven't any beavers ... (having said that, they can be quite a pain in the neck)

Swamp Rat - you are right on about the U-shape helping a bit with staying close to the body. The lacing and the width of the shoulder strap helps keep it in place too. As for the dimensions, well they say a picture is worth...well, you know!

The lacing took me probably three or four evenings. I was learning how to do it as I went so it would probably go a little quicker next time. Hope this helps - Flint

Well since a picture is worth a thousand words this might have something to do with it. Never saw any beaver cuttings until 15 years ago down here. see a few cut trees now but hardly ever see a beaver.

You did good on that bag I'm impressed with it.

Thanks, but talk about impressive...as ole Jim Bridger used to say :shake: "Holy Freakin' Jaws of Death Batman - Look at the head on that!"

You might find your beavers in that critters belly! :) Verrry nice. :hatsoff:

Nice work! My hands ache just looking at the stitching. I made out the beaver right away but didn't get the leaves until you mentioned it. GW

That is the biggest beaver that I have ever seen! When it was said that the life of a fur trapper was exhausting and dangerous I well believe it.

Yeah it might not be politically correct but it is pretty nice looking. You did say PC right? :blah:

Ha, good catch. I did actually mean HC...must have been mentally tuckered out from all that lacing! :haha:

SwampRat had commented that the pouch design seemed like it would cling to the side. Prior to this past weekend I had only used the pouch at the range and it did exactly that. This past weekend I gave it a 'real' test. I went on a woodswalk that had a fair amount of up and down, twisting to throw hawk 'n knife and some archery to boot. The pouch hung to my side just like it was supposed to (even with my wonderfully round shape  )!
