I just got the March 2010 edition of the NRA American Hunter magazine... great story on page 36 called "Hunting for the Past" about two West Virginians, Larry Townsend and Tim Dowler who enjoy hunting turkeys 18th-century-style.

I looked for the article online to post a link but couldn't find it.

Anybody know these guys? Are they in our midst here on the MLF?

Maybe this'll promote a welcome boost to our ranks!

Read it too...always glad to see the occasional article like that...unfortunately they're too few and far between.

:hmm: ...I wouldn't think current articles like that would be available for free online until they've aged some...seems like it would work against magazine subscriptions

IHMO the story was too short. I sure would like to see more like that, if we hound the mag, maybe they'll print more. There are so many successful hunters on this site, with pics, it would be fun if they had just a short piece each month showing pics of harvests (kills).

It's always good to see traditional stuff but I wish they had fleshed it out a little more. Mostly it was "hey look at these two guys who dress funny and use old timey guns when they go turkey hunting."

If it had been an article about modern turkey hunting there would have been endless detail on guns, loads, camo, calls, accessories, etc.

Since my son & I are both NRA Lifers, we each get a magazine...he gets hunter and I get rifleman, so we get both :) and don't miss a trick.

When we're done with them, I take them to the indoor range so they get a new home instead of getting thrown in the recycle bin  .

So they shoot them at night out of the roosting tree? Traditionally that's how our forefathers hunted turkeys, calling solitary birds in is a relatively new thing generally speaking, it is not a very efficient method compared to shooting them from the roost.I would imagine most were shot with a small bore rifle too but have seen no documentation on it.I too wish there was more written about hunting with traditional guns, I was looking for an article about hunting waterfowl with a flintlock fowler and couldn't find one. Told my wife we ought to video us hunting with front stuffers this upcoming season since there is nothing on the web, she seemed open to taping it for me.

Hey, Bill!
How about I send you my stack of American Hunters? I'll bet I have two years about to go in the recycle bin.
