Hey all! On the old roundball bag molds.....approx. what calibers does the stamped numbers on the side work out to?? Ive come across a few with numbers stamped on the side. I think they were #12 and #16. I would like to find one to take along in my shooting bag for my .75 smoothbore. Thanks a lot yall.......TN :hmm:

They are marked in lead balls per pound. 16 works out to 437.5 grains, or about a .66 caliber ball. Your .75 cal musket is an 11 bore, or a 636 grain ball.

My .54 is a 30 bore, which is where I think the elusive "30 caliber Hawken" of legend came about.

Do you think a #12 would work in my.75cal.? Ive got access to one pretty cheap. About what would a 12 add up to? Thanks again........TN :thanks:

I use a .735 ball in my .75 with .015 patch. The 12 mould should cast about .730 so should work fine.

Alright guys....I really appreciate it! While were on the subject..about what guage would a .32cal be? Stumpkiller..what is the formula??

The mold I have in my kit for my Bess is marked 12 and it throws a ball that is approximately 0.729 to 0.710 in diameter. It had been used quite a bit and is worn. It does work in my Bess. I'd tell you to snap up that mold and use it. Look to see how well the mold halves match up and see if the cavity size is about 0.729"

Alright guys....I really appreciate it! While were on the subject..about what guage would a .32cal be? Stumpkiller..what is the formula??

What formula are you referring to...?

We don't need no steenkin formula. I use Musketman's chart or the weight of the round ball divided into 7000 (there are 7,000 grains to the pound, and gauge is a measure of the number of bore size lead balls to one pound).

The formula would be one that gives the result of the gauge when all you know is the diameter in inches. So in my spare time, I have come up with the following formula.

gauge = 4.655 / (diameter*diameter*diameter)

So, for your 32 caliber rifle shooting a 0.310" ball:

gauge = 4.655 / (0.310*0.310*0.310)
gauge = 4.655 / 0.029791
gauge = 156.25 balls to the pound.
A 0.308" ball comes out as 160 gauge.
