32 Cal
Bought this .69 cal smoothbore because it appeared unique from a collector in NC as part of my collection. It is a two band short barrel that is only 32 inches and total gun length only 48 inches . First thing you will notice is the north star engraving on the breach of the barrel and what looks like brass or bronze coming through. Definitely not military issue. The rear sight is definitely not original and you can see the outline of the original sight location where the engraving is. There is brass or bronze material around the sight area and around the tang. The lock also does not look original for the gun and there is that brass metal all around the nipple area. I pulled the barrel and have the proofs for both top and bottom.
Is it possible this was a flintlock conversion? Is this some type of paas welding type? The proof on the bottom of the barrel is M NC 2, and I have included a photo of the top proof. The barrel has a number of B-139. Last question (for now), by the proofs and number what history can I find on it and where?
