Are you referring to Pyrodex pellets vs. Pyrodex granulated powder?

If so, I would take granulated powder over pellets, that way you have more than 3 choices...

50 grains - 1 pellet
100 grains - 2 pellets
150 grains - 3 pellets

If not, I feel real good old black powder is the way to go, it was good for the last 355 years, it'll be good for the next 355 years...

I think that he was not refering to the one lump or two stuff, but rather asking about Pyrodex vs Black Powder.

I tried Pyrodex early on and did not get consistant groups with it at all. I also noted rust in the bore in spite of my effort to clean carefully. I do not like it and generally suggest BP. I have also seen many new shooters improve shortly after switching.

I shoot Goex in 3f or 2f and see no reason to switch. I have a fair number of cans of Lidu, Elephant and Swiss. Nothing against them, I have seen others do quite well with them. I bought a lot of Goex before a large price increase and became comfortable with my loads with that powder. I did not want to mess with good enough simply because I know what they do in my barrels.

I still have some Pyrodex laying around in a magazine as I was not sure if it would make good fertilizer. Might kill the grass.

Not sure about the Pyrodex, but that Pachyderm poop ya got makes good fertilizer. In fact, that is about all it is good for. ::

The perdox powder ,or the old type pour in powder. :results:Black powder Home page

I used Pyrodex RS for years in sidelock percussions and had great results with it, the only consideration being that you need to get strong fire to it for good ignition...the only lube I ever used in the bores and on patches was Natural Lube 1000, maybe that had something to do with the overall success, dunno.

Then I switched to flintlocks and Goex, and found that Goex has very fast ignition, is as clean or cleaner than Pyrodex, and is also very accurate, so I went back and rezeroed my percussions with Goex as well.

The struggle we usually face between BP and BP subs is local availability of real black powder vs. bottles of Pyrodex lined up on shelves at Walmart, etc.

If real blackpowder is avaialable to you locally, or you don't mind mail ordering it from a Goex supplier, that would be my recommendation.

If not, IMO, Pyrodex is a good proven BP sub alternative and readily available...and FWIW, I always liked to use loose powder vs. pellets...IMO, 100grns of pellets seemed to jump pressure faster and had sharper recoil than 100grns of loose RS

(Pssssstt: but go get some Goex...it's the real deal !!)
:front:

kinda like 777 myself. i realize that i committed heresy by not using bp.

Freedom of choice, that's what it's all about...

Also, not everyone has access to real black powder these days without buying a pre-set amount...
