Fred and friends, here are the photos of the new Ol' Sadie. I recently straightened up some architectural problems and refinished Ol' Sadie. I originally built this rifle about 15 years ago. Besides the refinishing I also refitted her with a new TG.

She feels a lot better about herself.

Beautiful rifle....the new TG {old one, too thick and wrong shape}, along w/ the reshaping of the wrist, really adds to the overall appeal. You must have did some studying of originals and shaped the wrist just like some of the "old ones"....Fred

Wow, that stock turned out great. Nice color and the sheen is just perfect. Great piece of wood to work with too. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Thanks for the compliments fellas, I never did warm up to that amber color. I like this a lot better. I have learned a lot from talks with Don Stith and our own Gray Wolf. I have had the pleasure and honor of handling several original Hawken rifles in the past years too.
Best to y'all,
Don

Did you refinish the barrel and lock or does it look that way from the picture?

I kinda of like that flat muted black instead of the shiny blueing.

If so, what did you use?

Nice work, stock color is beautiful....

She do look really great a lot better on here than the pics came out. Cooner I think you hit the wall with this one ya cant do anything else to make it better, perfect is just that perfect. Fred :hatsoff: :hatsoff: ps the color is really something I just went back to our Hawken pages and you really made it so much better in wood and color.

Legion, I used LMF slow rust brown. I did refinish everything, metal and wood. The first picture of the "before" is just bad lighting. It was actually brown barrel but the lock was blued as well as some of the furniture. Fire blue. The "After" shots were done today in the sunlight and are true to the color of the metal. Everything is brown now. LMF is a good product, IMO.

Thanks Fred, I thought you might like it. It took me long enough to get them posted, huh?

The lock, hammer and barrel looks like they had powder blasted stainless finish put on them. I just bought a brand new knife with a finish that looks the same. It is powder blasted stainless

I must add sorry I didn't on my last post. That is one fine looking rifle. I would love to own a gun as pretty as that. The stock has the style I always try to buy fancy but not afraid to hunt. Great work my friend :hatsoff:

Only a month Don, I went into the hospital right after you sent those pics but they didnt look like she do now...wow! Fred :hatsoff:

No sir, it's just finished with LMF brown and rubbed back between coats with those white scotch brite pads. It's brown steel in bright sunlight.

Well, she used to shoot pretty darn good. But, part of the rework was moving the sights around and I'm now in the process of getting things back to center. She is shooting 2" wooly worms at 40 yards. I'll keep tweeking 'er until I get 'er shooting again. Thanks for all the compliments fellas. I'll pass 'em on to Old Sadie. She'll like all this attention. Ya know how the gals are. :winking: :hmm:

Very nice
The wood is simply ammazing... Tony the tiger, eat your heart out.
Don't know what you did when you re-shaped it, but it looks smooth and elegent now :applause:

The major problem was the thick wrist and the hump at the first tang bolt. The way I remedied this was to straighten out the tang and lower it in the stock. I also let the trigger bars in deeper. This gave me a sleeker appearance but the nose of the comb was to high then, so I worked that over too. You can see how thick and heavy the wrist was in the first photo.
I got this piece of wood in a trade. I wish I had more of it.
