This is a little 25 caliber. As of this date, the barrel is in the wood. Today I'll make some barrel tenons and pin it to the stock, then I'll start to inlet the lock.

Looking good, hope you keep us up to date on the progress. That 25 cal. sounds like a neat little rifle.

Will it be done next week? I like what I see. I am sure glad your not on the 5 year plan.

Blahman ~ Who is the barrel manufacturer? I'm planning on building a small caliber flintlock to hunt fall turkeys with. I was going to settle on a .32 cal, but a .25 is even better!
One more thing, what size lock are you using? Thanks ~ Rick

This is my first flint rifle. Do I have to learn all new cuss words to shoot a flint or will the old cuss word work just as good? Do you think that Musketman may have some good words to use?

Olie got it from Ed Rayl, it's a we bity thing. Olie gave me a handfull of parts and a chunk of wood , the barrel, then said:

"Go forth and multiply!"

hold on, hold on.....I got that mixed up.

He said " "Make thee rifle for me."

That's better...the wood is birdseye maple that has been salvaged from a bungled up job by somebody else....you'll have to ask Olie what happened, he can explain it better than I can....this gun will definenetly be a challange! :hmm:

You're right about turkeys being classified as big game, however, you can hunt them with a .22 if you want. Doesn't make sense to me, either.

Blahman -
I have a .30 flintlock with Bill Large barrel. What do you recommend for a cleaning jag, .270 brush with patch?

A little check with the small game regs. You can use any size rifle in the fall for turkeys, but if you want to bag a squirrel with a muzzle loader it has to be .40 cal or smaller. A .25 would be a pleasure to hunt with, i'd imagine .

Bob J, try this: get a 32 caliber jag, chuck it into a drill press and use a file (while the press is on) to gently remove excess metal from the jag. Do this until it fits with a patch. I've done that on several odd size caliber guns.

GobblerKnob,

If you plan to hunt in turkeys in PA you might want to check the arms and ammunition regs. Turkey falls into the big game category. My memory is rusty at best but I'm pretty sure there is a .44 cal. minimum for big game in PA. Then if you hunt in a special regs area you'll have to do some more reading on page 102.

Good point Old Salt. In Ohio, the regs say a person can hunt squirrel with only a 22 caliber rifle. I think the term 'rimfire' is mentioned.

So does that mean I can't hunt them with a 32, 30 or a smaller caliber flintlock? I don't know and every wildlife officer I've met does'nt either. All the officers tell me is that if they saw me in the woods with a flintlock rifle (small caliber), they would inquire about the gun, then be on there way.

I don't hunt squirrel on public lands due to this reason. All it takes is one ODNR officer to have a hair up his (fill in the blank) and my rifle is gone, I'm before a judge and I'm immediately out of money.

Trying to find a place in my neck of the woods to hunt is very, very, very hard to do. Farms and acrerage get sold, divided into 3 acre plots and that's pretty dang small.

People are distrustful of anybody that would like to hunt, distrustful of folks in general.

Consequently, I haven't shot at a squirrel with a flintlock in four years now, I doubt if I will ever do it again. :(
