One of my current projects, just haven't made a final decision yet on completing the horn and I'm waiting for arrival of a couple of beaver tails to finish the pouch. The beaver skin is from Alaska when my brother lived there, hunted, and trapped there. I sheared this piece to the bulking look. The base plug and smaller pieces are Osage Orange. They may or may not be used.
Any thoughts?

I really do like the scallops on the baseplugs. Very nicely done! What is the diameter of that plug, and how heavy is it?

In my old age, I have become less interested in lugging around extra weight OUTSIDE my body, since I already have enough inside it!

Have you removed any wood from the inside of the plug to reduce the overall weight?

Now for the dumb question: I see what looks like a napkin ring turned out next to the spout. What is that ring used for ??? If you attach the spout to the horn, how do you attach it?

Thank you kindly for the nice words gents. To answer some questions the base plug is approx. 3 1/8 in. in diameter, about an 1 high from the rim of the horn and is hollowed out to reduce the weight. Overall weight at this stage about 8 1/2 ozs. and about 11 3/4 inches long. I still have some 'shaving' to do aroung the throat area yet.
The 'napking ring' is actually a 'collar' I might be using if I go with an internal screwtip setup. Again, using osage orange. Too bad my camera isn't picking up the rich golden orangy shade as in person. The base plug took about 12 hours to turn then carve. It was a long day.

I think that is a stunning base plug! That grain really adds to the over all appearence. Very nice!

Very nice, I am really impressed with the work. I have been thinking of a Buff horn for my .54 when I get it built up. Now I got some ideas!

Gary,
Have you ever had trouble with Osage turning color. The reason I ask, is because every time I have used it in turnings. It turns a darker brown cinnamin
redish color after awhile..even with a finish applied. Or maybe that's what you want? Nice craftsmanship!

Thanks again guys! Its good to hear some words of encouragement. Rick, I haven't worked too much with this wood, but after having a couple of tool handles done for me I really like the look of the golden orange against the backdrop of the black horn. Kind of reminds me of my first Harley. Anyway, the base plug being mostly end grain is naturally going to be a tad darker than the spout area, but so far I like the color variation. The collar and tip vary from dark to light in variation and should be fine. After polishing them on the lathe I used french polish shellac that really made the color pop. Time will tell how the color changes.

That is sure a keeper. Very nice job on the carving, it's outstanding. Show us more when it's completed.
Dusty :hatsoff:

Very nice carving.

Osage orange oxidizes and turns darker when exposed to sunlight. If you look at osage bows from the southern plains tribes, you'll often find the tip that is on the upper end of the bow case is dark chocolate brown and the rest still yellow.

"Any thoughts?"

I think it would be a darn shame NOT to use that base plug! That is sweet!

Yup, gotta use the base plug. It's already installed and I decided to turn another tip and permanently apply it to the spout area. Therefore, not going to be a screwtip. Hopefully will have done today if this head cold gives me some relief and it stops freakin' snowing. Can't wait till Spring. Just my luck I'm living in snowmobile country.
Thanks again for all the kind words and I will post a completed picture.
Keep yer powder dry.
Gary
