Did anybody else get caught in that evil blizzard that dumped 18 inches in southern CO?
Damn and all I had was mocs to hunt in.
A true Fri the 13.
Luckily Sat was 55 and sunny.
Got to my honey hole and yelped, pured, and cut my butt off but the storm knocked the flocks off the breeding ridges two thousand feet down into the hell hole of scrub oak, pinion pine and juniper. I got one volunteer at ten am in the deepest darkest hole. I just had to take off my big girl panties and and go for it.
two hours later I am in the mix of things. I found twenty birds together with five BIG!! Toms.
So they weren't even hened up yet so no amount of calling was going to do squat. Time to turn injin and sneek. I got twenty yrds and took my bird. It took me three hours to get back to camp. Well worth the hunt.
22lb Tom one inch spurs nine inch beard.
Thank you Turkey gods.

Now that's a nice Tom. Sounds like you had a great hunt. Haven't been able to coneect yet, but still have nearly 6 weeks. Now if the rain would stop. Congrats.

Hell ya!!! :hatsoff: If all goes right me and the boy will be out saturday morn.

Nice Bird!

You have to actually hunt these CO turkeys to appreciate your success. Not at all the way the eastern hunters describe it!! :shocked2:

Looks like the Spanish Peaks behind you?

Have not gone out yet but think I'll go to Nebraska this year.

yup those are the Spanish peaks,
Without a doubt these are some of the hardest birds I have gone after. More like elk hunting than anything else especially during a early season spring storm, Thank mother nature they don't have an elks olfactory.
I tell you what tho I wish I was going to be around in a week or so when those Toms start to light up. I love gettin in a down and dirty screaming match with a big ol Tom. It's as thrilling as calling a bull elk into bow range.
Adios my friends I am headin to WY,ID,MT to do some guiding, Trekkin, and maby a shoot or two.
Good luck Bruin next weekend and anybody else gunnin an elusive Turkey.

just west of Trinidad up in the Mt's hard to get to because it is surrounded by ranch land. I found a sm piece of public in the middle of it all. a gripe of a hike to get there but worth it.
I haven't seen any other hunters in there probably because of how extream the access is.

amazing.. i live 17 miles west of trinidad up in the hills of Boncarbo. We usually dont get to many hunters in this area. Been seeing a lot of deer so far.

Is that near Jim chancler's land? a rancher I think. He is a friend of one of the outfitters I guide for.
I am only 20 min from Trinidad before I start hiking, Not sure of the milage but it's at the end of a dead end dirt road.
