I am going with an Iron Pensylvania rifle from TVM.I am also geting a knight MK-85 but that guy aint home and my dollers are burning a hole in my pocket.I am getting it in the white in .50 cal.Oh yeah in flint.Who can I get flint ready to go from and maby a book on knapping them.Gun looks good seems like the cal. will be ok for the hunting i'll (I hope )And should be ok to to teach the kiddies on right ?

If your Pennsylvania is in .50 caliber, it is, IMO at the minimum for Elk but it will do fine on deer with a 80-100 grain powder load and a patched round ball, out to 100 yards.

If you use it to teach the kiddies, remember, you don't want to impress them with it's power. Keep the powder loads light and use patched round balls only.
How light is light? I would say about 35-40 grains of FFg for the kids. 40 grains of FFg blackpowder will give about 1300 Feet per second muzzle velocity (which is faster than most 22s), but at 670 Ft/Lbs of energy it won't kick them badly.

After all, this is supposed to be FUN!! :: ::

Yeah I dont want to scare them off But they have shot some pretty big guns for there size but they dident like it.I dont know if I will ever get to hunt Elk but I might try one time.I figured that a .50 wont be to bad and for the hunting and general wood's bumming I plan on doing .50 will be fine.I will have some work to do as I will be getting it in the white(knock150.00 off the bill)What is a good finish? I dont want fancy wood because I can be hard on guns and I was thinking of useing the birch wood casey stuff.and some books on flint prep and all that.I also got in the mail the book "building the pensylvania long rifle.Good read verry straeght forward.

A great place to look for supplies is in the "Links" forum. Lots of suppliers there, in all price ranges. Can you buy your powder locally?

Well I think so.I never baught any before.I am going to check at Wal-mart and we have some specalty stores like osh mans around but I guess they will only have Goex or somthing like that.I may have to do like some of thees other guy's here and order it.I would like to get 4 or 5 diffrent kinds to see what the gun perfers.I have a crapy flint lock that I domp goex in but I only shoot it to make noise and smoke. The rest of the time I use it for a paper weight at work.
