Last night I got home from work and my son had the ATV's out and we went for a ride. We went up to my woods and checked out my tree house. When I started up the steps I saw a bear had chewed the hand railing the whole way up to the porch and when I reached the door I seen where he chewed the small wooden bars between the glass panes and almost took the glass out of the door. So we went on down further to check out my sons tree stand. when we got almost there I could see the door was open. The bear chewed the steps and all the braces on the stand, got the door open and tossed his chair out and appearently had used it for a resting place. On our way back home we stopped in at our camp site where we do our woods walk shoots and the dad burn bear had knocked down our hawk block stand and a couple of our benches. We had been watching for signs all summer and did not see even a hair, now all of a sudden the signs are everywhere, besides the vandalizing there was scat everywhere. maybe my son should get his bear tag and sit in his stand for the opening day :shocking:

Sorry for the boring story, I just wanted to share it with you guys. There are bears in Pa. Thanks

sure are bears in PA....i have video of a mama and 5 cubs in my back yards and always see them around out here in pike county in northeast PA....just last sunday on my way back from the store there was a mama and 2 cubs...............bob

Yes, fellow Pennswoodsmen. By the way, I will likely very soon be completely a Pennsylvanian again, at least for a little while. :redthumb: :RO:

I have seen the black bear while hunting deer in Lebnon County, while hunting turkey in Union County, while hunting grouse and squirrels in Lebnon county. I even had a cub who obviously had never seen a human before, checking me out over the ferns while I read a book facing the forest in Bradford county. Cute little fellow he was, Face contorted in a look of chagrin :: when I spoke to him. When I stood up he was going like a shot down the trail to the spring. I thankfully haven't had them eating my furniture or buildings. :what: Thanks for sharing the story, Griz. It makes me want to live near your place. :master:
God bless.

Griz, so when are you going to post the "boring story". The one you posted just kind of gets me pumped up. Thanks and good luck to your son. Will he take a ml for bear season?

Nothing boring about your story. The reason you didn't see any sign all summer is that bears, as well as deer, change their forage areas during the different seasons. I'll wager that there is either an abandoned apple tree or some acorn oaks near by. This is their forage this time of year. Did you or your son leave any food or candy wrappers in your tree house or stands? Another reason for bears to move their range is loss of habitat. Any new construction in the area? Bear tag sounds like a good idea. Bear grease, bear paw stew! Nice bear skin! Worth the effort! :m2c:

we do not leave any food of any kind and I own a fairly good chunk of earth and there is no construction around anywhere. The acrorns are so plentiful it is like walkin' on ice.

Yep sounds good, my brother put up a bird feeder at his cabin and had the same problem. Evey week the bear would rip it off the post and eat all the seed.(poor little birds were hungry) So that fall he got a lincense and got the so and so. He had it mounted and the first I said was were was the bird feeder in the mount? lol

Doesn't have to be food or the candy itself, just the wrappers are enough to draw animals. Construction can be miles away. Could just be a "cub boom", driving bears into new territories. But it sounds like you have a prime spot to harvest yourself a bear. Good Huntin! :m2c:
