what would be a good oz. weight fer a possilbes bag that will not be to stiff and not to soft....etc (3oz or 7oz)....looking fer some leather to make some knife sheaths and also be able to use it fer a possible bag also....so i don't have to buy multple weights of leather...................bob

4/5 oz will work, but as Stumpy said you'll want a little more for a sheath- so you can line it with rawhide to give it stiffness and strength- there was a thread about this somewhere recently.

Nice thing about getting 4/5 is you can double it and glue (grain to grain) to make belts, heavy straps, that sort of thing. Also cut strips for lacing and making wrapped handles.

I make all my bags with 2 oz leather. I also line them which makes it a little thicker. Properly sewn, 2 oz leather will withstand about anything. I own around 15 originals and have seen many more. They used fairly thin leather.
