When making a powder horn and you boil the horn and place it on a cone to shape the large end. What do you use to shape it. The instructions I read said to use a lathe and shape the cone, I don't have a lathe and am looking for an alternative method.

I have always made a plug to fit the horn and not tried to change the natural horn shape at the point I have cut it.

. Fortunatly I have a lathe so I've never been faced with that problem, but it seems to me that in another thread on this subject someone suggested using a section of a baseball bat. :hmm: .... You might also be able to use a bottle (beer perhaps?) if you can find one of the right size and taper. This is what makes turning out the gear so much fun;........ trying to figure out ways of improvising when you lack some of the materials or tools.

Paco97,

Something I have done in the past was to use sections of old baseball bats for a forming plug. They are already tapered and can be found at just about any thrift store, yard sale or toy closet.

You could also try a old bowling pin with the sock darning end cut off. Thats the top. You might fimd candle pins? That another type of bowling pin tall and slender. The baseball bat works good also. Next go to the local Home depot or Lowes or hardward and get furniture legs some of them are round and tappered anywhere from 1" to 4"s should work fine.
