I made a video a couple years ago of hunting rabbits with my friend Chris I met through shooting black powder. Last year I went down twice, and we did ok.
Today I went down for the first rabbit hunt but after heavy rains last night and 40 mph gusts today I didn't think it would be very good hunting. The morning started out decent with a few jumped and we each had a miss and I had a clatch. Knapped my flint, and I connected on one about an hour into the hunt when the dogs brought it right back to the raspberry patch they jumped it from.
We had a few others up but no shots. There after we made a big circle and only jumped 2, (sitting about ontop of each other) on the other end of the farm where we each shot at the one and got hair off of him.
Honestly at this point we figured it was kinda over but we had a couple hours yet to hunt.
I don't know what happened other than it dried out some, but despite the tremendous winds we started kicking up rabbits everywhere, even where we had just been in the morning.
I shot one on its way back on a nice tight circle. Then less than a half hour later the dogs kicked another out to me, which I killed.
I had 2 misses after that and I thought it might be hard to get that limiting rabbit with this fowler!
Sure enough after a few circles the rabbit came past me at 15 yards and I managed to shoot my first limit of rabbits with a flintlock.
I also got a squirrel at one point during the day.
I got more shooting than Chris did, but he struggled hitting them (as I often do as well).
It was a fun day, despite the weather and it made for an action filled afternoon.
Thanks for reading/looking.
