pan brush

Could someone show or tell me how to make a pan brush for my flint lock rifle. I have an old pig hair paint brush that I could use the bristles from to make the pan brush. Any help would be appreached........ mudd turtle.

I find that a dirty thumb or a piece of rag will do the work just as well. You could take a small piece of brass tubing, dump in some expoxy and then push in fibers cut out of an old paint brush if you were looking for something fancier than a dirty thumb.

mudd turtle, I made one out of the pig bristles from a paintbrush which works well for me. I don't use it a lot, but i does the job when I need it. I clipped a bunch of bristles out, wrapped the end with thread, made a loop of wire which I stuck down into the bristles at that end and glued all that together. I then took thin rawhide and made a tube to fit it, laced with sinew, put the loop and bundle into it and glued that.

There a million ways to make one, whichever you choose don't make the bristles too long, they will be too limber to really scrub the pan.

I have a pan brush but seldom use it. Around here, there is just enough humidity to cause the pan to get moist crud in it between shots. I found that a rag does a better job than a brush. I keep a small rag about 3/4 the size of a shop rag in my bag. It is handy for wiping my hands and the pan. A rag is just an extremely handy thing to keep on hand when shooting a muzzleloader. If I didn't have the rag, I'd be wiping my hands on my pants and then on the way home, the stink from the burned black powder would get on my car seats. It makes my wife complain. After 50 years of marriage, you just learn that if your wife isn't complaining about something stupid that you did, life is just nicer. So, a rag is part of my standard gear.

Simply take a piece of horn or antler tip and drill a hole in one end. Put a little epoxy in the hole and stick a tuff of that hog hair in in. Let dry and drill you a small hole through the small end of the tip for tying a thong or string to!

This one I made from horse tail hair. Double over the hair and tie it with a string then melt some pine pitch glue and mold it for the handle.
