:shocked2: Getting my stuff in order for our monthly club shoot tomorrow. Noticed my range box patch cloth supply is getting low. Plenty for the shoot but time to restock. Looked on my shelf for my back-up supplies and discovered there is no more ticking. :shocked2: To top that, our local Wally store has not had ticking for several months, they may have discontinued. Woe is me. What to do?? :idunno: I do have large amounts of denim that I used to use but that requires a smaller ball and/or a bigger hammer to seat with. Until I find ticking, bigger hammer it is.

It's not about the ticking, it's about the thickness of what you have.
There never was, nor will there ever be,
a guarantee that any material from any supplier,, ticking or not,, will be the same thickness time after time.

Find a Jo-Anns Fabrics or a Hancock Fabric store, they should have what you need.

I kind of get the idea that the pillow ticking of today isn't what it was years ago. Most of it is just regular cotton fabric printed like pillow ticking. I'm sure like most things some is of good or better quality than others of coarse.

necchi, I know that, always use a mic.
We don't have any fabric supply store in the area except WM. Hate to pay shipping by ordering online and getting mystery material. Will use denim until I get to a larger city to shop.
Actually, after my shoot today I probably won't be competing until Feburary. Will be having rotator cuff re-repair early next month and will be unable to lift a rifle for a while. I'll even be forced to pestering y'all here by typing with one hand. :wink:

Our Wally's still has ticking.

If that rotator cuff repair is the butt end of your rifle shoulder lighten your powder load the first time you go back to shooting when you 'think' it is all healed up. Yea, you can ask me how I know this, and it is very unbecoming to cry like a wee girl, or cuss like a shipyard worker after that first shot....I wanted to do both. Surgeon was not too happy with me, but I did no damage.

I just bought a couple yards of brown pillow ticking at walMart and it works well in my .54. I should probably go back and buy a few more yards of it though.

Based on my recent shopping experience...You can't always count on color...!!!!
I've had excellent results with blue striped "pillow ticking type" material I got at a Wal-Mart quite a while back, in a different state from where I currently reside. I'm running out of it, so I went to my local Wal-Mart to buy more. This store has the blue stripe material, AND a brown/tan stripe material as well. I might be a little anal about this, but I shop for patch material with a micrometer. Upon measuring both, I found the blue stripe offering to be measurably thinner than what I've been using. The brown/tan stripe was a good match. I'll run some range tests,before I run out of the blue..then go back and buy a BUNCH.

My wife asked a worker in the fabric department of our WM about ticking and was shown some light brown, not striped material. She said this is the way ticking is these days. :idunno: Today, I'm going there, armed with my trusty micrometer, to check it out. If weave looks OK, thickness is right and is all cotton, I'll buy some. Nobody breath until I report back.

Just got back from my errands run to town. And woodenyenoit I forgot the mic. Enneyhow, WM now has a tan striped ticking that looks good. Also some duck of a type I haven't seen before that has promise and two types of muslin that, likewise, look promising. NEXT times, I'll measure the tan ticking and if it is right that is the way I'll go. All is not lost. :grin:

OK, went back again, found some light tan striped ticking. Looks OK. I did have the mic with me and took several readings. Most of it is .017". About one thou under what I have been using. Really, I'm not about to lose sleep over a .001" difference. Washed it last night and will lube and store today. I'll use my beeswax/whale oil mix, probably my last.
They also have, again, pure cotton baby blanket flannel in 100% cotton. I use for cleaning patches. That is, indeed, good news also.
