What type of paper is used to wrap a conical bullet. The specs. call for .010 thick paper.

Thank you all so much. First time firing this rifle. Caliber is 41(10.4mm). bullets I have are .408. My research was,
" original bullet ordonnanz 1851, mini style with patch, on- yoke (.010) ". Mic'd the bore it's as called out 10.4mm.

For info. It's a Swiss Feldstutzer model 1851, also called Eidgenossischer stutter 1851.

.010" thick paper would be incredibly thick, like tablet backer. More like .0015" thick or so. Most patching paper will add .006" to .0012" with four thicknesses (two wraps). I also use some ancient 9# onion skin I picked up in a thrift store. Seth Cole still makes it but it's kind of hard to find. Usually Buffalo Arms has some if you need it.

That sounds right on thickness. Was thinking about how the .010 would work. Thanks. Now I'll see what I can locate.

This sounds interesting, where can I find the information on how to make paper patch rounds for my new (to me) weapons?
Search for posts by @Idaho Ron on this forum or send him a PM. He has helped me and many others get set up with paperpatching. There are a lot of YouTube videos out there on the topic, some good, others not so good. Ron will get you headed in the right direction if you are interested.

I have been using vintage 100% cotton 9 pound onion skin with good success. .002” thick, two complete wraps.

I use this :

The Paper Jacket Book by Paul A. Matthews
That book is more geared toward shooting PP with smokeless powder in cartridges. For black powder, might I suggest "Loading and Shooting Paper Patched Bullets" by Randolph S. Wright. It focuses on black powder cartridge rifles but the concepts of bullets patched to bore and wad stacks carry directly over to muzzleloaders. And as David mentioned above, he has a great tutorial available on his site.

Randy Wright's book is probably the best out there currently in print.
Another source that is out of print and deals strictly with patching for muzzle loaders is Ned Roberts Muzzleloading Caplock rifle.

Usually, 100% cotton is preferred. But, I’ve used a lot of 25% in many originals over the years with no issues.
Hardly any 2 paper mfg are alike - I have multiple reams of 9# bond. Some are 0.0018”, one is 0.0017” thick.
You need to know your bore diameter 1st.
Then based on your paper (2 wraps) cast one to the appropriate size. If you have to - size 0.001” can be done.
Not hard, just math..
Good luck
