I have a old straight razor. I was wondering how often these would be used to make patch knives and would it make a good one?

Andy,
"Patch knives" are essentially a modern invention. Previously, any cutting implement might be used to cut patches, rather than having a dedicated item. I pre-cut all my patches at home (with scissors), but when patching material needs cutting, my folding or belt knife is used.

My suggestion is to use your razor to shave and just use whatever knife you have handy to cut patching....

Back in the late 70's and early 80's, every trader from blanket to large companies were selling cheap imported razors and mounting a chunk of deer antler to the blades and calling them patch knives and a lot of people bought and used them, as such!

This is a do yer own thang game. Those old razors make good patch knives. No point on the end is a safety plus and they sharpen well. The tang is ideal for sticking on some kind of handle. On the range nobody cares how 'authentic' the stuff is that comes out of yer plastic tackle box. Myself, at the range I have dedicated patch knives. At ronny I used a small belt knife. Whatever floats yer stick, go fer it.

Go for it. Dixie Gun Works always sold straight razors for patch knives. In reality a hunting knife was probably used unless dull. There are pc shaving kits with a mirror inside a small wood box and an integral strop of some sort. I shave with a straight razor now and then CAUSE its fun but never did the pc research.
Ever notice how some folks are scared of straight razors? Why?

I know! I know! Pick me! .... Cause there easy to cut yourself with?

:rotf:

I'm not scared of them but one would intimidate me some. The thought of getting cut by one gives me the heebe Jeebes. Don't know why but I have been cut by razor blades a few times.

I shave daily with one. It was a little daunting at first but has a really short learning curve. Now i don't feel shaved without one lol

How about if Michael Madsen of Reservoir Dogs fame wanted to give you a "shave" :shocked2: ???

Back when I was clean shaven I hated the sometimes-twice-daily grind of scraping my face off. Didn't make me feel human. To each his own.

I agree 100%. I use a dovo razor and love how a straight razor shave feels. In my opinion there is no other shave quite like it.

I use a badger brush and I buy my soap from The Art of Shaving store in a local mall.

It's a great way to start out a good day.

I ran into a guy that would use them and he would ad deer horn to use as a handle and it made a great patch knife . That pup was sharp.
