just wondering what do most of you fellows that shoot.50cal lyman gpr use for patches and thickness i know it will vary from shooter to shooter but i was just looking for a few suggestions from other shooters

Hey two-bellys :hatsoff: ,

I've had a Great Plains capper for 8-10 years  . It seems to like .015 ox-yoke patches with bore butter. That is if I use .490 Hornandy brand balls or the local muzzleloading store's off brand balls. If I mold my own from my Lee molds (.490) the .015 patch is a little tight. I just started molding my own balls about a year ago, so it might be something I'm doing wrong. I've tried several different sizes including pillowtick and I still think the ox-yoke type .015 works best for me. Experiment around!!

Keep your powder dry!!

I, too, use the Ox-Yoke patches (in a GPR flinter). I just bought some T/C pre-lubed patches; I expect no change. I have tried pillow ticking with a Hoppe's lube. Same result - gun shoots fine and I am able to load without any undue effort. I run a patch saturated with denatured alcohol down every few shots. The ball is pure lead and cast from a Lee mould. I have not measured the as cast diameter.

I use drill cloth with .490 dia ball, lightly lube with Go-Jo white, felt overpowder button.
dry patch with a loose fit patch after shot. brush about ever 10 or so shots.

Let me know how that lyman shoots don't forget to clean that narrow pattern breach area --Spud :hatsoff:

All the Lymans I have or ever had like .020 patches.I now use .020 pillow for a patch in the ones I have now.

With both my 54 and my 50 GPRs it depends on whether the balls are home cast (Lee molds) or storebought (Hornady) ".490" balls. You're only asking about 50, so I'll stick to that.

With storebought my 50 likes either .015 prelube or .018 Walmart ticking with bore butter. It's pretty tight with the ticking, and almost right with the .015 prelube (very slightly too loose for my taste) and way loose with .010 prelube (holes in recovered patches).

With the home cast the ticking is awfully tight and just right with the .015- again to my taste- and blows .010 prelubes.

Not surprisingly, the Hornadys mic and average of around .491, while my homecast run .4925 to .4935.
