I just watched the Patriot again - and I was struck by the fact that Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) after presumably picking up his tomahawk after 20 years was able to stick a guy in the forehead while the guy held a knife to his son Gabriel's (Heath Ledger) throat.

I was a very good tomahawk thrower in my younger days (25-27 yrs old) and I picked up my tomahawk again and at 41 yrs (only 15 yrs later) it took me 3 days of practice to knock the rust off well enough that I can stick the hawk regularly.

Just thought it was interesting

 Yeah but you aren't Mel Gibson---it's as simple as that. The character he plays is one who had done a mighty lot of killing "in his halcyon days" so it goes along with the "mystique?" I don't know bout you but when I pick up the throwing knife or hawk, I have no trouble hitting the target in general, as for clocking a guy in the forehead or the red centre, nah. So we are in the same boat---too damned old to cut the mustard, and too damned young to die silently. Fun ain't it???? :rotf: :yakyak:

The air is much denser than it was in the 18th century, two hundred years ago is changed very little in twenty five years time but today its altogether different, hence the learning curve. Make any sense?

I was an M-60 gunner in my teens, last time I fired one was maybe 20 years ago.

My life, and others depended on the fact I could use it to the best of my ability.

I have no doupt if I had to, I could pick one up today and use it with the up most proficiency.

Like ridin a bike

Yep, I could do the same with an M-16 - but shooting an M16 or M-60 ain't quite the same as throwing a tomahawk at a target that might measure 12" X 12" with enough lethality to keep your son's throat from being cut - which is what Mel Gibson did in the movie

You're correct. It's a movie - A "hero tale". It's supposed to be larger than life and it is. :)

But it still looked cool, didnt it? :v

Absolutely. Sometimes stories are written to portray how we wish it was (could have been), not the reality. I get enough reality in my daily life. :winking:
I guess that's how our tall tales evolved. I can see Nimrod Wildfire reenacting Ben Martin's exploits :winking:
BTW, ain't you supposed to be up at Manzanita right now mister? :nono:

I put it up there with the British guy hitting a moving target at 100 yds. while riding a horse with a smoothbore pistol. "It's just a movie"

Hey look at this way guys ... without it and others ... we could all be watching "Broke Back Mountain" instead! :shocked2:  :hmm:

Not me :nono: My wife threatens to make me watch that if I'm not behaving

Mine too.... :surrender: :surrender: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Do ya know they used a pyramid tent in that movie? Yeah, I watched it, at least up until it got "weird."
I used to want a hunters' tent, but now I can't even set foot in one! :shake:
There's buddy movies, and then there's "Buddy" movies. Give me good ol' fashioned Mountain Men any day.
Since this is a Patriot thread, I guess I'd better get back on topic. at least the Patriot and BB Mt. had one thing in common, ol' Ben Martin really stuck it to the enemy :winking:
