How PC are counter-sunk screws?

screwhead.jpg

You see them on patch boxes and such, I have also seen round head screws domed over the item they are securing...

Just how far back does the counter-sunk screw go in gunsmithing?

Yep, what age are they?

I have seen some that look like Frankenstein's neck bolts sticking out of the side plate (lock bolts) of an old musket...

Squire Robin -- them thar screws look like they came from the butt plate of the 03 Springfield I have (which is currently for sale - BTW). :)

MM,
Depends on the school where the rifle was built. It is very traditional on a Lehigh patchbox, for example ( Herman Rupp used them as did others ). They wouldn't fly on most Lancaster school patchboxes. It depends on the school, builder, and rifle. :)
