Does anyone have any experience with these folks, good or bad? I just ordered their catalog and was wondering if they were good to do business with for the new/inexperenced builder. Thanks to all.

IMO: Excellent people to work with.
Dick Greensides owns Pecatonica River Long Rifle Supply Co, and has been in business for over 10 years. He does not farm out his stocks and makes them on his multispindle duplicator machine.

I have bought all except 2 of my stocks from them.

The only not so excellent thing about them is they don't respond to mail very fast.
Their catalog was rather unimpressive but their products (and their prices) are great. I heard they are coming out with a new catalog before long.

If you decide to order from them, I would recommend calling them and placing the order over the phone. That way if there are any questions they can be worked out right then.

Every time I have ordered using the phone, I have had ALL of my parts within 4 weeks. :)

Sixgun- I just visited Pecatonica River Long Rifle Supply in Rockford, ILL two months ago. Dick was at Friendship with about half of their inventory, but I saw a great number of stocks and their twelve post spindle duplicating machine in action. Also got their new catalog, it is good. I suffered great frustration, because although I could look at maybe 20 stocks of every kind they cut for, I don't know what I'm going to build next so I couldn't pick out the best one on hand! But I'd be pleased to do business with them.

Thanks, guys. When I called to order my catalog, the gentleman on the phone was very friendly. Since I've never built anything nearly as complicated as a gun before (basic woodworking only), I thought I'd give their flintlock pistol kit a try before throwing myself into a rifle. I appreciate your responses.

Hi Sixgun45LC;

I have only built one longrifle, an Early Lancaster from Pecatonica. As best I can tell, they run a small shop. Every time I've called, I've either talked to Dick Greensides, the owner, or Jeff, who apparently cuts the stocks.

I'm probably way more cautious than most fellows, and I certainly asked them plenty of questions before I ordered. The quality of the stock and the parts was excellent. The large siler that I got seems equal to any large siler I've felt, and that's what lots of fellows have so I've felt plenty!

They also cut dovetails for sights and underlugs way cheaper than some others. Jeff cut and crowned me down a barrel to 38" for a very reasonable price. As this was my first, Jeff cut the butt for my buttplate, also very reasonably.

They are slow to respond to email,... but to be fair with them, they are a small shop. If you call them on the phone, they are both great fellows to talk to.

Yes, their old catalogue is woefully pitiful! Somebody tell me all about the new catalog! Is it worth ordering a new one? Are all the products the same?

All in all, I think they deliver very nice wood, more than I expected for a grade 2, $100 stock!

I will be ordering my next rifle from them. The wife and I are having a house built right now, but as soon as we are in and the hunting seasons are past, I'm straining at the bit to tie into one!

Any more questions, feel free to ask!

Ironsights- Their catalog is very good. 96 pages. Wonderful color cover photos of rifles built with their stocks and parts. They show 36 long rifles, muskets or pistols with complete parts lists and prices for all. They show their blank stock and usually a completed firearm with that stock. They give specs and dimensions for each stock style. They show stocks for 16 single shot or lever action cartridge guns. Barrels. Locks, and all other furniture and parts. Their description of each style of firearm is excellent. They clearly spell out their stock grading and prices. They show photos of discounted flawed or seconds stocks. Gunsmithing they do. You need this if only for the reference material.

I got their catalog just last week and was also impressed.
I found myself in a pinch and placed an order with dick, I rushed him an in fact was on him constant as to delivery he didn

I have nothing but good to say about Pecatonica. Everytime I called, I talked to Dick. Very personable. I have purchased two kits from them and found the quality of the stocks to be above what I had ordered. I'll do business with them in a heartbeat!
Rick

I ordered a kit from Dick a couple days ago and I agree real personable and real good prices.

I'm thinking about taking the plunge this Christmas with a rifle kit and I originally was looking at TOW but now I may want to get the catalog from Pecatonica. Do they have a web address? Also, does anyone have any information on another company called Golden Age Arms Company? I just finished a pistol kit from Traditions and now I'm ready to have some real fun :::shocking:

Thanks,

Lancer

I purchased a Tenn Mountain rifle kit from them at Friendship and am very pleased with the quality and service I recieved.I had them do the breech plug and barrel stays on my 45 green mountain barrel. I am a new rifle builder and with the help of several folks I will complete a fine rifle. I would definately recommend Pecatonica.

I believe that Golden Age Arms Company is no longer in business. I've been told that the owner retired and sold off all the odd's n' end's to some other vendor.

Not sure, but I've heard this several places.

Jerry.
