Just wanted first hand experience on what the cap size for the Pedersoli 1861.

I know 4 wing musket caps arnt the greatest but I’ll take what I can get as long as it’s right.

thanks.

Musket caps, RWS is the only brand in my experience. I don't know why you say 4 wing musket caps aren't the greatest, they work just fine and are easy to handle. If you would rather use #11s you can buy a nipple for them and the thread size is 5/16-24.

When CCI went from their old hot 6 wing musket caps to the newer 4 wing "reenactor" caps, they reduced the amount of compound in them, and some apparently find that they sometimes aren't hot enough to be reliable for actual shooting. I haven't used them and have read mixed reviews. I went through a lot of their old 6 wings and they were great. Other brands of 4 wing cap - Schuetzen, RWS - work fine. I read better reviews on RWS caps, but I haven't had any issues so far with Schuetzen.

Definitely musket caps. have some without the wings and I hate them because they sometimes don't blow off the nipple. With the winged caps, you can pinch them in a bit to conform to the nipple if they happen to be a bit loose. They are also easier to pull out of your cap box if you have large fingers like I do.

That’s what I thought I read but I couldn’t find it anywhere.

Dont know where it’s coming from that they are no good, probably bench rest shooters or something.

Honestly I wanna shoot and black powder seems the way to go. Current supply is out of everything but and it’s the one period I haven’t dabbled in. So why not, reloading and shooting at the same time without the wait in between the two.

Thank for the input.

Noticing CCI 4 Winged Musket Caps say
“FOR REENACTMENT USE” in the title. Any difference?

CCI Reenactor caps are garbage unless you want to shoot blanks. This ISN’T the opinion of just bench rest shooters but those who care about accuracy and reliability. I shoot Civil War era guns in competition, look up North South Skirmish Association, and we are NOT bench rest guys. We DO care about accuracy and reliability and I don’t know of a single N-SSA member who uses CCI Reenactor caps. The old six wing CCI were the gold standard, but thanks to a lawsuit by a reenactor who got injured, probably from a poorly maintained gun or cavalier attitude to safety, CCI caved and discontinued the six wing. I shoot RWS exclusively for competition.

Sounds like you’re new to black powder

Yup brand new to it.

If that’s the case with the I won’t purchase them in the quantity I seen for them.

Any good suppliers?

I recommend GOEX powder and Dynamite Nobel (German) caps are the RWS ones. This is where I buy all my supplies and have since 1976. He is a GOEX distributor and the major supplier of powder & caps to the N-SSA membership. Jackie is a great guy and ships several times a week to all legal destinations and he knows the laws on what you can own.

Back in the 1980's when my Reenactment Unit hosted two re-enactments, we gave free 5 lb. powder allotments to artillery pieces who showed up at the reenactments, no matter what side they were on. I combined that with what folks in my unit and others wanted. So I had to make two special trips, not part of my NSSA Spring and Fall National Championship trips. Both times I had between 75 and 100 pounds of black powder in varying grades in my car on the way back to Fredericksburg.

GREAT folks to deal with!!!!

Gus

Do they ship?

They do ship, it's just an old school site that handles sales over the phone or via email instead of having an add-to-cart style online store.

As for the phone thing, don’t hesitate to leave a message. Jackie WILL get back to you. He has an active farm and doesn’t sit by a phone all day.

Original nipple or was it converted to number 11 caps back in the day when musket caps wete difficult if not impossible to find locally, and the Internet and/or online shopping (which came years later) hadn't been invented yet?

Musket caps if the former, Number 11 Magnum caps if the latter.

Avoid "Reenacter" caps and powder, unless that's what you're doing.
For hunting and target shooting/target competition (includes the shooting matches at the Rendezvous) use regular caps and powder.

The guy who sued them’s name should be made known so he can forever be publicly scorned.
