Took my new (to me) Pedersolli Bess Carbine for my first shooting session with it today. Had some ignition problems. A new flint helped but when I took the lock off for cleaning the mainspring dropped out. Upon examination I discovered that the spring was snapped off about an inch forward of the retaining screw.

First of all: anyone know of a source for the spring? I couldn't find one in TOTW's online catalog.

Second, any ideas on the cause of the broken spring? The gun appeared to be quite new, maybe even unfired when I bought it.

Thanks!

You might try Richard Beauchamps. He ran Flinlocks Etc for years, and was a full line Pedersoli importer. He was retiring about a year ago and was closing everything out. I bought a lock from him a little over a year ago. I can't find any web presence, but here's his contact info.

I just purchased some parts for my Pedersoli Lorenz via IFG, and my friend simultaneously ordered his direct from Pedersoli. He already got his, I have not gotten mine.

I recommend you go to the Pedersoli web site and see if you can buy the part direct from them.

Thanks, folks. I went ahead and put in the order with vtigunparts since I couldn't find the spring in TOW. Then after some of you mentioned that TOW sells I dug a little deeper and found it. Are all the Pedersoli Brown Bess main springs the same? I may have jumped the gun a bit as TOW wants $25 for the spring and vti charges $80.

Call track. I got mine there

The gun you did jump.

Mr. Beauchamp passed away in April. His obituary is in the June Muzzle Blasts. My first flintlock was a Pedersoli Kentucky. During the 90's I ordered from Mr. Beauchamp a number of times. Truly a fine gentleman with whom to do business.

You can order a replacement spring from pedersoli directly or Dixie Gun Works may have some in stock. The Track of the Wolf mainsprings for that lock are somewhat lazy.

You can also try VTI or Italian Firearms Group.

I went ahead and ordered the spring from TOW and cancelled the order with VTI. Hopefully the TOW spring won't be too lazy but I'll find out. I was thinking that if I didn't get the cancelation in or time or VTI wasn't as gracious as they were about cancelling the order I'd be able to compare an $80 spring to a $25 spring...not that I know what I'm doing with this musket enough to be making an educated judgement. Live and learn.
